Leland Butler is a Grand Ronde tribal member who is also Siletz (tribe) and Yurok (tribe). He started taking photos 10 years ago with the curiosity of self in mind and exploration of land and people. Today that curiosity has brought him to exploring further into the duality of light and shadow and how the two coexist both in nature and inside of us.

Leonard “Lenny” Harmon comes from a long line of artists and craftsmen, marshaling inspiration from his ancestors and Tribe, but is primarily self-taught. He has always been involved in creative endeavors – celebrating his culture through traditional crafts and dance. Born in 1983 in Philadelphia, PA, growing up in Delaware and Washington, D.C. Leonard was influenced by his Uncle, Leonard A. Harmon – an artist in his own right with paintings in private collections at the Heard Museum – and has developed a contemporary style of mixed media, showcasing a convergence of cultural traditions and contemporary social justice.

Nixon Danny Andy Narvaez is a documentary filmmaker, photographer, and land defender. Born on September 18, 1997, he is a son of the A’i Cofán community of Sinangoe in Ecuador and serves as an Indigenous rights multimedia activist. His homeland, surrounded by majestic mountains and the vital Aguarico River, stands at the center of the Cofán people’s existence and ongoing resistance against extractive industries.

He received intensive media studies training from the Alianza Ceibo Foundation, formed by four Indigenous nationalities of the Ecuadorian Amazon, in 2017. From 2018 onwards, he began documenting the fight of the A’i Cofán of Sinangoe against mining extractivism, which threatened them with 52 concessions around their land. His efforts set a critical precedent when they sued the Ecuadorian state and successfully eliminated these mining concessions, preserving their territory from contamination.

From 2021 to 2022, Nixon participated in the Emerging Filmmakers program of If Not Us Then Who, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities through storytelling, media, and art. In 2022, he directed his first documentary, ‘Yoco Cofán: Wisdom and Territory,’. Currently in post-production, this documentary explores his community’s efforts to maintain their spiritual ties, showcases their profound relationship with the land. In 2023, he collaborated with Canal+ of France, filming in Ecuador for the documentary ‘El niño de la selva.’

In 2024, Nixon continued his work with the Ceibo Alliance, leading organizational communication processes, conducting training sessions, and creating video and photo content.

Rita Harper .p is a visual journalist from Atlanta, Georgia. A quiet child, she grew interested in
imagery and observing her surroundings – both skills that have greatly benefited her work. With
no formal art education, she began to take to the streets of Atlanta and discover a style of her
own. She quickly realized the affinity she had for capturing Black life and Atlanta culture
simultaneously.

It is her goal to show the beauty of the everyday person. Rita has captured images of unsung
pillars of tight-knit communities, to regular people fighting against powerful, faceless
corporations. She wishes to amplify the voices and narratives of everyday Black souls, as a
reminder that all our lives have purpose, importance, and value. That you do not have to be
famous to have a story worth telling.

Rita has received several grants and awards, including the BET Network Artist in Residence
(2019), the Sprite X Wish Atl: The Give Back Artist Grant (2020), Southern Documentary Grant
Award (2020), and the National Geographic Emergency Fund for Journalists Grant (2020), and
the National Black Arts Foundation Grant (2022).

Abdellah Hamouma is a self-taught digital photographer born in Cincinnati to Algerian Kabyle parents. Drawing inspiration from the natural world and the evocative imperfections and colors of film photography and cinematography, Abdellah explores the intersection of cultural identity and artistic expression through his lens.

Born in 2001, Abdellah discovered his passion for photography in 2021. Primarily documenting friends and music artists, his lens soon expanded to capture the burgeoning artistic scenes of Cincinnati and other midwestern cities. His work engages with surrealistic and dreamlike concepts, weaving narratives through composition and color.

Currently, Abdellah is focused on exploring and sharing his identity and cultural heritage through his photography. He incorporates traditional symbols as a means of storytelling, blending contemporary aesthetics with ancestral motifs to evoke a sense of narrative and history within each image.
Looking ahead, Abdellah aims to further expand his exploration of cultural narratives and continue documenting the evolving artistic landscapes of his community. He seeks to collaborate with fellow artists and cultural institutions to amplify his voice and perspectives through photography.

Elio Cunampio is an Indigenous Emberá artist and photographer from Panama, his work centers on recovering and preserving Emberá cultural practices. A master of traditional Emberá body designs using jagua, Cunampio’s art is a profound expression of cultural identity and a link to ancestral wisdom, which he documents through his photography.

Like many Indigenous people, Cunampio initially struggled to recognize the value of his heritage due to discrimination before he rediscovered the profound significance of his roots through jagua body art. These designs embody deep cultural significance, representing Emberá cosmology, social structures, and their intimate relationship with the forest. His reconnection with this art form began a broader mission to revitalize Emberá culture, particularly in the face of challenges posed by hydroelectric dams and logging in their ancestral lands.

Cunampio’s photography serves as a powerful tool for cultural preservation, capturing both his own artistry and the broader tradition of Emberá body designs. Through his lens, he explores their role as a living language of Emberá identity and tradition and the idea that cultural preservation is deeply intertwined with environmental conservation. Working primarily in Panama, he continues to create and photograph traditional body art, showcasing the enduring relevance and beauty of Emberá culture.
