"Lights Out"

When I was satisfied with the larger compositions, I went in close to get some detail shots which have become so much a part of my photography.

Light modifiers are great. They can make a small light source appear larger. They can make hard light appear soft. They can even focus light down to a narrow shaft of light. However, when you are shooting outdoors, light modifiers, such as umbrellas, can quickly become cumbersome, as they turn your....

Wandered the streets of downtown LA and shot the skyline from a different perspective. Which do you like? Color or black and white? I like both, which is rare for me. I usually have a strong preference. (Hi-Lux)

"Elevate the Spirit" Greg Kiser Photography
As the light changed, I started to entertain different compositions that fit the sunlight better. I really liked how this one from down low turned out.

This is a new image I captured of some beautiful Paperflowers (a type of Bougainvillea) that I found growing above Morro Bay. I used the focus stacking mode on my Sony a7RV and shot three focus-stacked sequences to bracket the various exposures. The final image was a composite of the three series blended in Photoshop using masks. Was a bit time-consuming but well worth the effort IMO Smith Photography

Focusing on Aperture The primary purpose of the aperture setting is to regulate the amount of light that passes through the lens. Along with the shutter speed, it determines the quantity of light that reaches the camera’s sensor (or film) and forms a third of the ‘exposure triangle’. But, of m...

Have you ever replaced a sky on an image? Hmmm I have thought about it a few times but never actually done it until now. What do you think about sky replacements? When are they appropriate … or not? This particular image of Slate’s calf take July 2021 near Gabriola Island was a wonderful encounter with over 20 breaches on that fabulous day. But the sky was dull. So can I turn it into art and change the sky to something I like better? More vibrant perhaps? Or should we save sky replacements for when they actually represent what we saw in the moment? Or both? A few things to think about on a potentially touchy subject.
Regardless, long live Slate and her wonderful calf and thank you for the memories … sky or no sky.
