We have some super good news!
A few spots open in AP26A / 426A Visual Storytelling!
(Online course, starts Aug 26th).
Photos by Berry Shahani
Class Description
AP26A Visual Storytelling is a class of visual artists, photographers, and writers using their cameras and words to tell stories about their dreams and lived experiences. Using photographs, video, audio, and written word, students create visual stories about themselves and their communities, while also critically examining ethics and exploring emerging storytelling forms.

“We need to be the storytellers of the next phase of the future. And we need to concern ourselves not just with the content of our liberating imaginings, but with how we will imagine together.” adrienne maree brown

Learning through Creative Process:
Creativity is a muscle, so we do most of our work in this class through creative exercises. We encourage experimentation, trying new things, and not getting things “exactly right” the first time. Some of the themes we will practice together include:

Home and Self
Ecology and our Environment
Family and Ancestors
Neighbors and Community
Objects as Memories
Contamination and Repair
Walking, Weaving, and Journeys
Traditions and Rituals

Aphasia, Communication, & Growth ...
Hands Photo-Project

Students in AP1A Foundations of Photography and the Cabrillo Stroke and Disability Learning Center SPED210 Aphasia: Speech & Language students participated in a joint collaboration this semester at Cabrillo. The main focus of the project was to learn about communication methods such as spoken language, written words, and visual images. AP1A met the Aphasia students and got to share about each of their lives. Then we made photographs of the SPED210 student’s hands as an important form of communication such as body language and gesture. The hands also symbolize the shapes of flowers and the idea of constantly growing and persevering. In May, we had a pop-up gallery to celebrate the project!
