Anybody can take a picture when everything is going right.
The real test is what happens when it doesn't.
That's when experience matters.
Someone is nervous.
Someone doesn't want to be photographed.
Somebody's laughing at the wrong time.
They have forgotten how to fold their arms, or stand on one foot. A senior is convinced they're not photogenic.
A smile becomes unnatural.
I've spent a lifetime learning how to dissolve the technical problems of photography to make them disappear.
That was the easier part.
What I'm still fascinated by is the much harder challenge of photographing personalities.
For me, the best photograph begins with observing the person before I ever pick up the camera.
