In the image you see both stars and firefly flashes. Photographing fireflies is a bit like star photography ... the settings are similar; in this case ISO 2000, F4, 6 second exposure. Multiple exposure (6) adds to the effect.

At the Heron Rookery in Minneapolis last weekend. Wind from the Northwest was cold at 7 AM. My trigger finger got numb and it was difficult to sense the camera trigger through gloves.

Great blue herons are majestic migratory birds that arrive in the early Spring. The images depict males fetching materials for nests in need of repair (or remodeling). An immature bald eagle arrives and sparks a unified warning from one nesting pair. Their cry was shockingly throaty and loud, but the eagle stayed put. Cormorants rested from their construction activity and looked on.

Crex Meadows Sandhill Cranes:
I arrived just a few minutes after sunrise, in time for a good display of cranes taking to the air from their roost in the shallow water of the wildlife refuge. The succession of images depict cranes flying rightward to leftward with the sun at the right. They rarely fly overhead, or so it seems; they tend to avoid people (smart).

Crex Meadows Landscape:
In Autumn, the flat terrain is a place where ochre grass and oak meet blue sky and water. This place is calming and leaves me feeling deeply peaceful; perhaps, because it is so flat and, except for my car and camera gear, free from the visible and audible hand of man.

A few favorites from the MN Zoo Jack-o-Lantern Trail. I was blown away by the breadth and artistry of this display. And, thoroughly absorbed despite finger numbing cold (lost my gloves while fumbling with equipment) and the 45 minute procession from the queue gate to the first jack-o-lantern tableau.

I shot with a Canon 5d m4 and 24-105 f4 lens. Started with iso-100 setting and a monopod for longer exposures. The motion blur was impossible to overcome. Best results were handheld with iso-800, f4, 1/13 sec.

Between rounds of feeding, she perches on a favored branch. One that she will return to. The natural lighting was perfect to accent feathers.
I'm processing images taken over the last two weeks.
