🐧Last Light
Sometimes the photograph isn't about the subject—it's about the light.
When I first spotted this Galápagos Penguin, it was simply standing on the rocks. I waited as the sun dropped lower, hoping for just the right glow. A few minutes later, warm golden light wrapped around the penguin, creating the silhouette and rim light I had envisioned.
Backlighting creates beautiful atmosphere, but it also leaves the face in deep shadow. During editing, I gently brightened the face just enough to reveal the detail that was already there while preserving the feeling of the evening light.
I also chose a tighter crop than my original composition. By removing some of the surrounding environment, the focus stays exactly where I wanted it—on the penguin, the light, and the quiet moment.
Photography isn't about changing what happened. It's about helping the final image reflect what it felt like to be there.
