When I was younger I used to do what I called “bug work”. I searched and collected bugs around my house and would put them in observation jars. I was probably around 6 or 7 when the large 17-year old cicada brood emerged. It was during this event that I started collecting cicada shells and I had the bright idea to find as many as I could and attach them to my shirt. I was very proud of myself and my collection so I went to show my mom, who was not pleased haha.

So, every time I see cicadas I think about that story they tell me. This was my first time watching an emergence and I found it very interesting.

The Osa lowland rainforest is the whole reason that we went to Puerto Jiménez. Everywhere we looked there were multiple animals nearby. However, since the rainforest is so large and tall it was frequently a game of eye spy to spot the more difficult sightings. We would listen for animal sounds as well as movement in the landscape. They would also explain the relationships within the rainforest, such as the old and new growths of trees and the interactions between wildlife and plants. I feel like I learned a lot more as a naturalist by observing and listening to our tour guides on this trip.

This fiery-billed aracari was an exciting find and it made our tour guide's day to see it. He said they were hard to come by. They are in the toucan family and are half the size, or less, of a toucan. This bird was one of my favorites from the trip.

The common basilisk lizards are well known from animal planet because they are the lizards that run on water, which is why they are nicknamed "The Jesus Christ" lizard. Prior to this trip I did not know that these lizards were in Costa Rica. We actually saw the first one while we were in our hotel pool because I unknowingly startled it and it quickly took off in front of me.

When startled, these lizards find the closest body of water, get on their back feet with their torso straight up vertically and start running across the water. While they are running across the water their back feet grab onto tiny air bubbles that keep them above the water. Their average speed of 15mph is also a factor in keeping them from sinking. The younger basilisks can also run farther than the adults since they are lighter with a distance range of 33-66 feet while the adults can only go a few feet before they start to sink. How amazing is that!?

Watching a heron eat a crab is quite violent. Once this yellow-crowned night heron captured this crab, it started to drop it and stab it with its beak multiple times. The next step was to disarm the crab by ripping off its legs to avoid pinching. With the special feature of a short, stout bill the heron bites down to crush the exoskeleton of the crab prior to swallowing it whole. How neat is that!?

The only crocodile encounters we had were around the hotel grounds. We mostly saw them in the river that snaked around the property nature trail. I think the biggest one we saw was 6-8ft. There were also caimans but we only saw them at night.

The spider monkeys were the most difficult to spot because they were very high in the trees. The image above was a lucky shot that I didn't think I would get because of the height distance and shadows.
