It would be a serious travesty to watch more small businesses close their doors in Annapolis. Please consider joining and signing the petition

Hello, this is Jennifer Sowers. My husband, Eric, and I have owned Level for nearly nine years. In that time, our staff, guests, neighbors, and this community have become such an important part of our lives.

Small business owners don't typically speak publicly about how hard things can be. Which is probably why it has taken me nine attempts to write this post.

We keep showing up. We make payroll. We take care of our employees. We welcome our guests with a smile. We try to figure out how to survive the slow weeks and absorb the rising costs. And then we come back the next day and do it all over again.

Along the way, we revel in the times that we get to hear guests laugh with family and friends together at one of our tables and when we clear plates from a table that appear to have been licked clean from a dish that we've created. We laugh with our staff members over trivial things and swell with pride as they move on to new adventures. These are the moments that make it all worthwhile.

We know some hardship comes with owning a business. But it is incredibly difficult to accept the added burden of a parking program that makes it harder and more expensive for people to come visit us or even work at our restaurants and shops.

It has been heartbreaking to watch what is happening to small businesses in downtown Annapolis. Seeing so many closing their doors is jarring. Unfortunately, by the time they have announced on social media that they are closing, it is too late.

From multiple confusing apps and increased fees, to aggressive enforcement and unwarranted citations, we have watched helplessly as our foot traffic has slowly declined over the past three years.

Just so we are clear, I'm not ready to write a goodbye post for Level. I will continue to fight for my business, staff and guests.

Individual businesses and residents posting on social media, emailing the city and testifying at city council meetings just has not been effective. The only way forward is if constituents stand with local businesses in mass and we are all willing to work with the City to find solutions that are fair and sustainable for everyone.

Level is proud to stand with so many other brave businesses that have added their names to the growing list supporting parking reform in downtown.

Happy Father's Day to Brandon E Hendrickson

Most of the time, it's hard for me to write anything of length.

(I lived on the struggle bus through high school and college, where they always wanted kids to write more, more, more!)

For whatever reason, I could write all day about the subjects I capture.

I suppose because the story is right there, and you don't have to look hard to find it.

This man has wanted kids for as long as he (or certainly I) can remember -- oh by the way, that's my husband.

People say a lot of things, and my sardonic reception of "I want kids," only drew memories of how much my mother STRUGGLED with all 5 of my siblings and I.

I guess I'm narrow-minded, because I skeptically missed the joy, and only saw the struggle...

But these photos tell such a different story. I've never met someone so thrilled to be a dad.

Thrilled when he's exhausted,

Thrilled when Sophia is screaming at us while we're working, and I'd like to NOT THROW HER OUT THE WINDOW.

Thrilled during the great poopy debaucles of upset tummy time.

He just wants to be a dad. Now he is, and he loves it.

The simplicity (to a terminal overthinker) kills me.

That's what life's all about, I suppose...

being completely "Surprised by Joy," to quote C.S. Lewis.

I enjoy these moments of joy, and I hope you do too.

P.S. to my fellow photographers, I wouldn't have immediately thought Rams Head Dockside at noonlight to be an ideal shooting spot, but take heed! It actually is.

A few shots from Janice Binkley 's Pol-a-palooza on Saturday.

Despite being quite exhaustified from the weekend...

I couldn't help but smile, thinking about the ways the horse's thoughts come through.

There were a few who, I swear, the thoughts just rolled off of:

"Ugh, excercise?! Today? MEEE?!!! WHYYYYY!"

"SOMETHING TO DO I LOVEITGETOUTTHEWAY... omg that was harder than I thought."

"Hold my b**r."

"Keep on swimming, keep on swimming..."

It's always unique, and always a pleasure.

Same bedroom, totally different feeling. 🛏️✨ I adjusted the angle to cut dead wall space, opened the blind to pull in natural light, and dialed down that harsh lamp hotspot — while keeping the warm nightstand glow intact. Cold and forgettable ➡️ cozy and inviting. That's the edit.

Power lines ruining your listing photos? Remove them. ✂️ I'm breaking down exactly how I went from flat and forgettable to bright, inviting, and schedule-a-showing worthy — sky enhancement included. The edit makes all the difference. 🏡✨

My second real estate photography shoot didn't go perfectly — and that's okay!

My client came back with feedback that the angles were off and the images needed to be brighter.

In this video, I'm showing you exactly what I changed, how I fixed the edits, and what I learned from the experience. If you're building your photography portfolio too, hopefully this saves you some trial and error! 🙌 And if you're looking for real estate photos at a discounted rate while I grow my portfolio, get in touch

I just got honest feedback from my client on my second real estate photography shoot — the photos weren't bright enough and the angles weren't great.

So I did what any reasonable person would do while my daughter was napping...

I fixed them. AND documented exactly what I changed and why.

In this video, you'll see real before and afters from an actual paid shoot, the mistakes I made with angles and exposure, how I fixed blown out windows, removed power lines, and why HDR merging isn't always the answer.

I'm a licensed Maryland real estate agent building photography as a business — so I actually understand what agents need from listing photos.

I'm taking clients now at introductory rates, and anyone who books me at this rate stays at this rate permanently. No price increases for my first clients. Ever.
