Today I’m recreating the iconic album of Mirrors, taken by . Similar to another Tom Munro portrait, he most likely used a large scrim to create the white background and highlights along the face. I show you a two light set up using flash and a white background. And since it was in my little home studio, I had to make adjustments for it in the distances.

I’m adding a fun twist to this recreate! My man and I challenged each other to recreate this image using two different sources of light. I get questions all the time on if you can create the same portraits I do with constant lights. What do you think?
Joshua is a fantastic photographer and videographer who also inspired me to start doing videos like this. If you don’t follow him, you should!
I have no clue who took this photo originally and if anyone knows, feel free to make a comment on it.

Another series of basic steps for a recent mystery portrait I did. Make sure to watch the video tutorial on the set up for this and apply a similar edit. Pretty much all editing programs, Lightroom, camera raw and others will have these settings under these names or similar.

Since posting this tutorial of taken by I’ve received a number of requests for what I did to edit it. Here it is! At the time of this post, the tutorial is pinned to the top of my profile for reference.
Or you could get it from my lighting recipe library 😉(my not so subtle advertising there😅)
For the eyes, most editing softwares should have an automatic eye enhancement slider. But in case it doesn’t or you can’t find it, create a local adjustments (mask the eyes) for the eyes and then increase the brightness and clarity. You can use the contrast slider, clarity and texture, sharpness and curves adjustment. Based on your portrait, you may not want to go too heavy.
Hope this helps!

Today I’m recreating a noir mystery look I found. Not sure who took the original, but it’s a classic detective/darker image that screams “it was Colonel Mustard with the butter knife!” All board game references aside, I had a hard time choosing between the images I captured. Which one did you like?

Today’s tutorial is a super fun, DYI portrait where I got inspired by some reels popping up on my feed. Both and .h.baker did really well with their use of light. Using a piece of cardboard I fashioned my own background and then used a continuous light source behind it to create a really cool effect. I did my best to keep this a one light set up and use a small reflector to add some light to my face. I failed on not adding enough haze, but this still turned out really well.
It was going to be a BW image, but I can’t decide if I like the color more or not! You tell me which one you prefer.

Today’s recreate is one I’ve been wanting to do for a while now. It’s of this beautiful portrait of Khrystyana taken by photographer Alexis Cuarezma . This is more of an inspired portrait rather than an exact recreate. I’m using the Halo 600x with its reflector attachment today. I feel if I had more hair, I could have created more of that “halo” effect. But the lighting set up was still fun to do.
(I apologize for the camera quality in this one my little action camera couldn’t really handle the dynamic range in this one and have since upgraded.)

White balance Daylight
Filter Prism Lens FX “Nostalgia” filter

Here are 4 simple steps to set up a speedlight on camera when you want to just expose for the flash. There are slightly different steps you take when you want to include the existing light in addition to the flash, but this is a basic method.
The other factor here is white balance for the camera which can be set to auto in this example or the flash setting.
The flash in the example is the Godox V1 Mid S (for Sony) https://amzn.to/4d5ggvy

This is one of my favorite lighting techniques and while you see it in many photos, the technical term is a bit obscure. Contre-Jour lighting is where the backlight is creating a wonderful and dreamy lighting over your subject. To all my French photographer friends, I apologize for my horrible pronunciation of this word😅
