Finally dusted off my camera and was rewarded with some action shots of one of my favorite birds - the Belted Kingfisher! There were a pair of them, and I believe these pics are of the female.

I took this back in 2021, and it’s still one of my favorites.

Pied-billed grebes - part water bird, part submarine! The juveniles have the striped face, parents a striped beak. These cuties are excellent swimmers but not so excellent fliers, with the ability to trap water in their feathers to affect buoyancy.

Caspian Terns are the largest terns in the world and seen primarily during migration in most of the U.S. Because it’s hard for them to learn to fish, fledglings are fed by their parents for months after leaving the nest.

I am so fortunate to have been able to hang out with a group of Solitary Sandpipers - a couple of adults and three juveniles - when they recently made a stop in Ann Arbor en route to South America. Unlike most Sandpipers, who nest on the ground, this particular species lays eggs in old songbird nests. You will most likely see them in the US in May and August during their migration.
