About Todd Salat - The Aurora Hunter
Todd Salat was born an Iowa country boy, making his way to the mountains as often as possible. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in geology at the University of South Dakota in 1986 and a Masters in geology from the University of Wyoming in 1989. With that, he scored a job as an exploration geologist and made that big right-hand turn to Alaska. As a geol

ogist, he enjoyed exploring and unraveling the earth history of the Brooks Range of Alaska and the Andes of Venezuela. However, the seven-year-itch came upon him and he resigned from his corporate day job. The first dream he chased was a year-long walkabout in the "Land Down Under," Australia & New Zealand. Todd returned to Alaska in 1997 to follow through on his dream of becoming a full-time freelance photographer. The next big chapter in life began with a blind date, and in 2001 he married the love-of-his-life, Shay. With a heated camper on their truck, they eagerly follow their mission statement:

Be There ~ Preserve the Moment ~ Share It!

ALASKA’S KENAI FJORDS
Here’s some of my SalatShots from the Major Marine Tours 8.5 Hour Northwestern Fjord Cruise into the Kenai Fjords National Park out of Seward, Alaska on Thursday, June 4, 2026.

MAJOR MARINE TOURS
I think their name says it all, because this marine tour was MAJOR league fun! In my humble opinion, the captains, deckhands & customer service personal of this locally owned company have consistently delivered a 5-star experience throughout the years, and this tour was no exception... it was awesome! The environment and friendly people I met onboard made the trip extra pleasurable along with the astoundingly gorgeous weather. Summer’s here, woot woot! Thanxsalat to Captain Justin and Mate Carl of the VIEWFINDER vessel for making this such a personal and truly memorable excursion.

FRESH L👀K
This weekend, May 23/24, kicks off our 15-weekend run at the Anchorage Weekend Downtown Market (which is under new & enthusiastic management, woohoo!). Our Gallerwheelia is freshly adorned with vibrant photos and our new tent canopy showcases my favorite color, purple. Shay & I are excited to share this summer's Alaskan energy with you in downtown Anchortown!

¡HAPPY CINCO DE MAYO from ALASKA!
Here’s a handful of shots I’ve recently taken during my explorations up the Glenn Highway northeast of Anchorage, AK. No auroras, but I did see stars. And the birds make my heart sing.

LOVE IS IN THE AIR
It’s migratory bird season in Alaska! This Sandhill Crane couple soared over me near Palmer, Alaska on the evening of May 2, 2026 and most likely are a part of the Pacific Flyway population that overwinters in central California. They are back to make babies and feed in the sun-enriched, fertile fields of the Great Land.

THE EXPERIENCE
While driving up the Glenn Highway into Palmer, I actually spotted two pairs of cranes flying toward me from a mile away, because they are BIG birds! I quickly found a safe pullout, grabbed my telephoto lens and enjoyed the fortunate moment as this couple flared overhead. Cranes mate for life and one of the last things my lifelong mate, Shay, said to me as I left our Anchorage home last night was, “I hope you see some cranes!” I texted a phone shot of this image to her an hour later and she exclaimed, “You have got to be kidding me!”

SLEEPING LADY SUNDIAL
Just before 10 pm on April 29, 2026, a molten-gold sun drops just left of the Sleeping Lady (Mt. Susitna), as seen from Pt. Woronzof in Anchorage, Alaska, and reflects in the outgoing tide of the Pacific Ocean.

Each springtime evening brings a noticeable jump of the sunset to the right (north) as daylight stretches and, from this vantage point, the sun will soon land directly on the Sleeping Lady for a handful of nights—then it’ll march on night by night until it slips off the frame to the right as the June summer solstice approaches.

BUDDY LUNA
Welcome back moon! A waxing first quarter crescent glows & grows in the 11 pm evening twilight from Anchorage, Alaska on April 19, 2026.

The hot white crescent is side lit from the sun, but, in this case, "there is no dark side of the moon." It's illuminated by earthshine; a bank shot of sunlight bouncing off of Earth. p.s. check it out with binoculars and see if you can see those craters glowing on the dark side of the moon.
