37 years in business!
In the mid-1980's, Carol had a very handsome collie named Skyler. He was aging and his physical health was beginning to decline. I decided to commission a photographer to photograph him. It was important to have someone come to me because of Skyler's mobility limitations. Unfortunately, no one was available and I took him to one of the very few studios who worked with families, must less those with a dog.
I surprised Carol with the gift of a portrait. She loved it. And that's when I decided, while taking journalism and photography classes at University of Alaska Anchorage (and Anchorage Community College) that there must certainly be others who would like to have portraits of, and with, their animal companions. Especially someone who would make home visits.
I stepped up my focus on photography, and had an exceptional teacher (Sam Kimura.)
I started my business in May, 1989. It was the same year that I graduated from UAA. I placed a very small (and expensive) advertisement in the Anchorage Telephone Utility Yellow Pages. My business name at the time was Alaska Pet-ography. The advertisement appeared the first week of June.
In less than one week after the ad appeared, I received calls from Rottweiler parents, a Golden Retriever mom and a pony family.
Business eventually grew to the point that I was handling a full-time business and a full-time job at Alaska Pacific University as their Public Affairs director. I had to make a choice: Stick with the full time employment (guaranteed salary, health benefits and retirement) -or- none of the above. "None of the above" also allowed the freedom to be creative and be my own boss. Obviously, I chose the latter and have never regretted a moment.
I love having the independence to make mistakes and live up to them. I love having the freedom from committees and layers of bureaucracy. I love creating portraits that cause people I meet to share their emotions with me. I worry, as most small business people do, that tomorrow promises uncertainties.
Things I'm most grateful for:
- Carol, my wife. She inspired me to pursue my passion.
- The animal companions I meet every day.
- My employees who have put up with my antics and do the real work. You are the best. I love watching you and your families thrive.
- Friends of Pets. Also formed in 1989, they invited me to meet and photograph thousands of dogs and cats who have found forever homes.
- Volunteers. So many who have stepped up to help with the studio's special events that have raised funds to support so many special people and causes.
- My customers. Your loyalty and support mean everything. It takes many of the uncertainties away.
Thank you everyone. We have more work to do.
And, as my grandmother, Joan Jensen, insisted: "Don't follow in my footsteps, I just stepped in something."
