This is it, friends. Happy winter solstice ☀️❄️! Today, we experience the shortest daylight of the year, about 5.5 hours in Anchorage and less than 4 hours in Fairbanks, Alaska. We will be gaining more daylight every day from tomorrow. Hurray!! But don't worry, it'll be dark enough until April to catch all the northern lights!

On the night of 11-28-25 I was out on tour with Greatland Adventures outside of Anchorage, AK. The solar wind was elevated and the BZ favorable. We worked closer to town this evening as that's where it appeared it would be clearest. The Aurora started as soon as we got out of the van, just after 9:00 pm. It quickly brightened for us, and eventually filled the sky overhead and behind us. After 3.5 hours on site some of the guests began to tire and we were able to get people back far earlier than normal this evening. I filled a memory card for the first time on tour making my timelapses. Less drive time gave me more shooting time, and it finally filled up. I'll get a bigger one for next time. Missed a nice burst that starts right as the timelapse ends.

The name "Alaska" is derived from the Aleut word "alaxsxaq", which means "the mainland" or "the object towards which the action of the sea is directed". It is also known as "Alyeska", or the "great land", an Aleut word derived from the same root.

Halloween weekend was an active weekend, with softer auroral displays, but soft displays have their moments too. I had a tour with Greatland Adventures Friday and a night off Saturday where I took advantage of clear skies nearby. The auroras were active, but the density low so the material was "softer" that was coming in. The Saturday show filled most of the sky by the time the time changed back, but with mild material. I shared a nice shooting star from that night. Here's a few images from the weekend, two from the tour I ran.

I've been busy in two job mode now that Aurora season has begun so I haven't had as much time to get posts up. The season has been a cloudy one, and it seems like I've had over half my tours cancelled for weather. I have had luck when we did get to go out, but a lot of nights were just plain clouded out. Here's some of the better shots I mustered during the last 3 weeks.
