If you live in Alaska or follow many aurora pages, your feed has been inundated by lots of great photos from last night's display. Here's one of my favorites! Although I wasn't feeling great last night, I saw the solar wind data, and couldn't ignore it. This photo was taken from the Seward Highway near Girdwood.

The sky appears blue due to the brightness of the full moon, just out of frame to the left. Many people wish for the darkest nights when moonlight doesn't wash out weak aurora. I love having moonlight illuminate the landscape and some of my best aurora photos are taken on nights with a bright moon. Hope you enjoy!

I've been amazed by aurora since I experienced it for my first time in September 1998, driving through Canada on my way to the state I've called home ever since. It wasn't until 2015 until I purchased my first serious camera, and realized I could capture these beautiful moments of time. I picked a great time to start shooting aurora, near the peak of Solar Cycle 24. Featured here is the corona during a significant solar storm on March 17, 2015.

At the time, I was in my early stages of learning photography, proper exposure, and editing skills. Thanks to the advances in technology over the past decade, I was able to salvage this photo.

I attended a house concert last week hosted by Kat Moore, an amazing poet, musician, and human being! Kat is a beautiful soul who spreads happiness wherever she goes and is a backbone to our wonderful Alaskan music community!

Her solo project is The Forest That Never Sleeps, but you can catch her with Super Saturated Sugar Strings, and also frequent collaborations with MANY Alaskan musicians!

Black Oystercatcher

May 2025

Photography helps me slow down and focus on things I have often ignored in the past. While peering through the lens, I discover birds I didn't know existed. I pay attention to animal behavior so I can be prepared for a great shot. I begin to notice interesting light patterns and think about artistic compositions. It's a wonderful hobby that teaches me new things about this beautiful world we live in, and also challenges me to learn the technical capabilities of the gear I use.

While watching Arctic Terns in Valdez, I noticed a few of these stunning birds, which I learned are Black Oystercatchers. I love their orange bills and bright eyes! Maybe next time I'll find one doing what they are named for, but I'm happy with this shot because I'm a sucker for water reflections!
