Late to the trend… but I can’t think of a better one to capture my little month of “backpacking” with baby.

I kept meaning to make a plan around a maternity session in Venice and some of our best friends living in Trier this year, but in true Mindy fashion, I just never really got around to the planning. It’s been obnoxious for everyone I’ve wanted to see bc I kept telling them I would be there in mid November or late November or early December… or whatever. But the people who love me, love me in spite of all of that, and Grant just doesn’t know any different! Originally I’d planned for NYC, Venice, Trier, Bavaria, and London. Once my boots hit the ground it went more like: NYC, Venice, Ferrara, Rome, Düsseldorf, Cologne, Trier, Pressath, Karlovy Vary, Prague, London, NYC…

I’m not giving advice. In fact- I don’t recommend traveling like this- it stresses ALL of my friends out. But for me- it’s been absolute magic to wake up and decide to add another stop. And I can say without a shadow of a doubt that Grant has turned into the easiest travel companion I’ve ever had. (Mostly bc he had absolutely no choice but to go with my flow)

Pretty sure every time I have posted anything about this girl I have told the same story- but it’s one that will forever define our friendship.

The day my mom called and said “If you want to see daddy, you need to come home tonight,” I remember I didn’t really believe her. I had a full day of mini sessions that I had opened to existing clients only, so I had a day with 6 families all of whom I had worked with at least twice, some had become close friends. I told everyone I was flying out that night to see my dad, but I couldn’t really comprehend that I was going to say goodbye. I’d already thawed salmon for dinner when my mom had called. “What am I going to do with my fish?”

I was numb as I tried to figure out how I was going to get to the airport bc Dane was on a trip and it was an 11pm red eye. I called Danielle. And she dropped everything. She came and sat with me, and helped me eat my dinner, and helped me pack, and helped me function, and then offered to cover me for any sessions I still had lined up. Offered to edit anything I didn’t have time to do. If you are at all familiar with you know that she has a years long waiting list and she usually books her entire year with a single email- so for her to make time and space to cover for me so that I could just be present at the end and be with my dad… I mean… I will never have words.

So yeah, she’s an incredible friend, photographer and mother. But even more importantly - look at that a$$!!!!

Don’t stop getting family photos just because your babies aren’t babies anymore! We only did ONE real family session as adults before we lost my dad. They are my favorite photos in the world. When this extended family reached out they had a window of about... 6 hours... that they were all going to be in Anchorage. Some were flying in from Fairbanks, some were flying out, but we made it happen. And I hope they will always remember how much we LAUGHED during this session. It was so much fun and full of SO much personality and love. It was such an honor to get to capture a part of their family’s story.

I fully believe that all girls’ weekends from here on out should end with a photographer capturing the magic. This night was just Love on Love on Magical Snowy Love.

These ladies have been best friends since high school— (can we just speak to what a credit it is to these women to maintain friendships like this for 20 years?!?) and now they’ve got loads of cute offspring to keep their reunions extra... exciting.

We started the night with my favorite ooey-gooey warm light and ended with the most stunning blue hour and we got so many amazing photos of the kids just being kids. As we warmed up by the cars afterward, basking in the glow of their beautiful friendship (which I had artfully inserted myself into), I said, “I should offer these.” And at first, I wasn’t even sure what I meant... But hear me out:

What if we picked a location like this one—easy to get to, no hiking required, cars running for warmth—and multiple families booked sessions together? That way, we’d have:

📷 A variety of groupings (families, friends, individuals)
📷 Different lighting opportunities for a mix of looks
📷 A seamless, fun experience without the stress of planning a full session alone

I feel like it might be perfect for extended families, groups of friends, or even just a mix of people wanting to get a handful of photos without “having” to do a full session. In fact, I’m convinced. I’m ready to book one myself for our group of friends so that we could get a few great photos of the adults together, pics of the kids who are all growing up like cousins, each family together, maybe a headshot or two for the funny aunt who is always hanging around... 😘

I mean... it SEEEEEEMS like a good idea. A cold idea for the photographer who will definitely wear her new heated vest and gloves... but a really good idea, right?

It’s officially winter here in Alaska (as was made clear by our little squirrel traipsing through almost a foot of fresh snow last night to go trick or treating). Which means my feed is going to turn white here in a minute. And while I’m excited for a winter full of hybrid studio/snowy sessions I just want to bask in the warm golden sessions of the fall for a few more days!

I can’t wait to visit these guys in their new home in Italy for ALL the photos!!! (And slides). Hint hint hint
