These deserve to live in the feed. šŸ“ø

I joked last night with Sammy Amazonian that when you hire me, you never really know what you’re going to get. I didn’t walk into this wedding knowing what we were going to get. I walked in, saw the space, looked at the time line… and went crazy.

I shoot for the situation and the vibe, not the Pinterest board. Sam & Eric’s vibe was a lot of things and we were bursting with inspiration. It was moody, deep, sexy, and cool as hell. But it was also romantic, and soft too… I think Kortney and I nailed it šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø What do you think??

ā€œI love you.ā€
ā€œI love you more.ā€
ā€œNo, I love YOU more!ā€

My daughter and I have this argument all the time and it makes me laugh because it’s the exact same argument I used to have with my own mom.

I can remember being completely, wholeheartedly convinced that there was absolutely NO WAY she could love me more than I loved her.

She’d laugh and tell me, ā€œyou’ll understand someday when you’re a mother.ā€

I didn’t buy it.

And now here I am, all these years later, on the other side of the exact same argument.

My girls tell me they love me more and I thinkā€¦ā€oh, my sweet girls. You have no idea.ā€

Because now I know what my mom meant. I know what it feels like to love another human being so much that it hurts. To look at them and somehow see the tiny baby they were, the little girl they’ve become, and every version of them in between.

My mom loved to remind me now, ā€œSee? You get it now, don’t you?ā€

And yes. I do. But here’s the funny thing…

I still think I was right then too. Because I haven’t forgotten what the other side of that love feels like.

I’m still somebody’s daughter. I still love her with that same fierce intensity I had when I was little. And now I get to stand right in the middle of it - a daughter who knows how deeply she loves her mother; a mother who finally understands just how impossibly much her mother loves her.

Maybe that’s part of why Stories of Motherhood means so much to me. Because someday our babies will grow up. They’ll understand things about us they can’t possibly understand yet…. And when they do.f I want them to have so much more than just photos of what they looked like when they were little….

I want them to be able to see how we loved them. šŸ’•

If my cloud crashed tomorrow and I lost every photo on my phone, I would be devastated.

But I wouldn’t lose the story of my family.

And I think about that more often than you might expect (or maybe exactly as constantly as you imagine 🤣)

I have thousands upon thousands of photos of my girls on my phone.

The ordinary stuff: the wild morning hair, the random cute s**t they do on a Tuesday, the soccer games, the ice cream mustaches, the family vacations… you name it, I’ve got a picture of it.

If my cloud got wiped out tomorrow, hell yes I would be CRUSHED.

But I would also be incredibly grateful, because the photographs that tell the biggest pieces of our story don’t live in my cloud.

They’re in albums, they’re on my walls, they’re printed.

Our biggest milestones, the seasons I never want to forget, the photos that make me stop when I walk past them because I can’t believe my girls were ever that little… those memories all have somewhere else to live šŸ’•

And lately I’ve been wondering… what happens to the 30,000 photos on our phones someday?

When our children are adults and we finally hand them access to decades of cloud storage are they really going to sit down and look through all of it? Or would they prefer the cliff notes?

Would they even know where to begin?

I don’t think they need or will want every photo we’ve ever taken. But I do think they deserve a collection of photographs that say:

This was your childhood.
This was our family.
This is how truly, madly, deeply you were loved.

Not every single one needs to be printed, you can let the thousands of beautiful, ridiculous, ordinary in-between moments live on your phone.

But don’t let the ones that tell the story of your family live there and only there.

Print them ā™„ļø Let your kids grow up seeing them on the walls.

—- I’m not photographing your family for your camera roll. I’m photographing them for the life that happens after it. ——

Ok, I think it’s time I officially shared this here.

Over the last two weeks, applications have been quietly coming in for something I’ve poured so much into: The Heirloom Sessions.

And somehow, I’ve barely talked about them here!!

The truth is, I created this experience because I believe our family photographs deserve a permanent home on our walls.

I want you in them.

I want your kids to see them hanging in the home where they are growing up. ā™„ļø

I want you to walk past them five years from now and stop for a second because you can’t believe how little they were.

On September 13th we are inviting 5 local families to participate at our special collaboration rate.

Professional makeup. Wardell guidance. A relaxed, fully guided portrait session. A 20x30 canvas of your favorite image. A private artwork design appointment to get everything you love. Moments from this very season of life that will live behind your phone.

This is also a collaboration with our amazing neighbors Smile YL who have added something special for you as well!

If you’ve seen this floating around and thought, ā€œmaybe I should apply.ā€

This is me telling you: Yeah, you should. šŸ’•

Xoxo.

I walk past this wall every single day.

These photographs are from our trip to Maui last year, captured by Jasmyn Foley | Maui, Hawaii Photographer .

It was just last year… and somehow, they look so much older already.

I catch myself lingering by this wall lately thinking about how quietly it happens. They grow. Their faces change. Their little mannerisms disappear. And most of the time, we don’t even realize a season has ended until we’re already in the next one.

I have thousands of pictures of my girls in my phone.

But these are different because they live with us.

My girls run past them every day while they play. I walk past them every morning with my coffee and every evening through bedtime chaos. They’ve become a huge part of our home and part of the story of our family.

This is why I believe so deeply in printing your memories and making sure they live on your walls.

And it s why I created The Heirloom Sessions.

I’m inviting 6 local families to experience the kind of portraiture that doesn’t end with beautiful photographs on a screen. We create something you get to live with šŸ’•

Because one day, you’ll walk past those photos and realize they don’t look like that anymore either.

Apply for The Heirloom Sessions now through the link in my bio. ā™„ļø

When your bestie gets everything she always deserved, and you get to stand by her side and watch it happen from day one through the wedding… That’s pure gold.

kara_venuto is one of my dearest friends. Ive known her for over 20 years, we are raising our daughters together, I’ve watched her endure the hardest challenges and maintain grace through it all. I admire her more than she knows and I feel so blessed to have her in my life.

(If you recognize her - that’s because she’s also our Design Specialist at SHS so you’ve probably met her!)

Nick Venuto & kara_venuto I couldn’t be happier for you both. I have loved watching your story unfold šŸ’•

Today is the end of an era in my life and it’s hitting me hard.

My face is puffy, I am tired, I am all up in my feels… but it doesn’t get a whole lot more real than this. So I’m putting it out there.

The passage of time is literally something we witness up close and personal as mothers. We blink, and they’re taller. We turn around, and they’re all of the sudden saying ā€œspaghettiā€ perfectly clear instead of ā€œbasketti.ā€

Most of the time we don’t even witness the ā€œlastā€ moment of that phase coming. We miss it all together because it happens when we look away for just two seconds.

Motherhood has a way of making you wish you could hold onto moments in the most desperate way imaginable. Literally trying to figure out if it maybe actually is scientifically possible to slow down time… (is it!?)

It’s the most beautiful and heart-wrenching experience of my life, watching my children grow and become new versions of themselves so quickly that it brings me to tears.

I love every single phase my girls have been in (except the tantrums, maybe not those moments)… and I mourn the end of every phase with my youngest because I know I won’t be here again. This is it. My baby is growing up.

One thing I am grateful I will never regret… is how many photos I take of them…. How many times I invest in a professional session… and how many beautiful moments are displayed on the walls of my home.

These moments are everything.

Twenty Years. ā™„ļø

I simply have to tell you about Jenny & Mickey. They met here in California well over two decades ago. Mickey was smitten from the moment he laid eyes on Jenny all those years ago… (he very clearly, still is - just look at the way he looks at her). They got married at the same church as both sets of parents did, Mission Basilica and had their wedding portraits taken at Mission San Juan Capistrano - then they followed Mickeys military career and landed in Georgia where Mickey retired from the military and joined the fire department and Jenny works as a nurse.

They are raising 2 incredible daughters together… one who is about to enter her senior year of high school!!

And for the last few years as they’ve been creeping up on their 20th wedding anniversary Jenny has known what she wanted to celebrate it… a gorgeous portrait session WITH ME (😭😭😭) right back where it all began… where their parents each married, where they married, back in their home town.

To say I was honored to hear that she’s been wanting to do this session with me for so long, is the understatement of the century. I am so humbled by this, so grateful that she thought of me, and gave me the honor of capturing this milestone in their love story.

Happy anniversary to a couple who literally sets the bar for the rest of us. Cheers to twenty years! Xo.
