The national emblem of the United States of America, the bald eagle, is a majestic, powerful bird representing freedom, courage, and strength. It holds a special place in many people's hearts, including mine. A couple of months ago, I had the excellent opportunity to photograph this beautiful bird in person.

Mallard ducks are pretty much everywhere and interestingly, males and females look very different. Males are generally what comes to people's mind when they picture these ducks - they have the iridescent green head feathers, white “collar” on the neck and dark brown breast. The females, as pictured here, have mottled brown and tan plumage all over. Both sexes, though, have a dark blue-black band of feathers, bordered by white, on their wings.

✨Demeter is the goddess of the harvest, agriculture, sacred law and presides over the grains and fertility of the earth. A goddess of the Olympian generation, she is the daughter of Rhea and Cronus and sister to Hestia, Hades, Poseidon, Zeus, and Hera. With Zeus, she had a daughter, Persephone.

After Hades abducted Persephone, Demeter grieved. The earth became barren through her neglect; thus, the winter season and its manifestations were a reflection of Demeter’s emotional state during Persephone’s absence. As goddess of the harvest, she is one of the few goddesses involved with mortals on a daily basis.

Demeter was worshipped throughout Greece, especially around harvest time and many festivals were held in her name. Her chief festival was a sacred event that only happened every five years. Demeter is described as an empathetic, loving, and persistent goddess with a generous and emotional nature.

✨Athena is the goddess of wisdom, war, law and justice, arts and crafts, strategy, and civilization. She is also known for her strategic skill in warfare and is the patron of cities. Athena is often portrayed as the companion of heroes and is the patron goddess of heroic endeavor. A second-generation goddess, she sprung fully-grown and armed from the head of Zeus after he had swallowed her mother Metis, the Titaness of wisdom.

She became Zeus’ favorite child, so much so that he entrusted her with his shield, the Aegis, and his thunderbolt. Athena assisted many of the Greek heroes in their quests including Perseus, Hercules, Odysseus, and Jason. As one of the three virgin goddesses, she never had children or lovers.

Athena is one of the most respected of all the ancient Greek deities. She had many temples across Greece with the most famous being in The Parthenon in Athens; one of the world’s greatest cultural monuments. Athena is described as a fierce, intelligent, powerful and ruthless goddess with a compassionate and generous nature.

A type of sea bird, seagulls inhabit areas near islands, coasts, lakes, and oceans. The coloring of seagulls is usually white or grey with black markings on the wings and head. While most of their diet is different types of insects, amphibians, insects, and small rodents, they will also consume fruit, seeds, and crumbs of human food.

The waters of the Pacific Northwest are rich with marine life. From multiple types of fish to otters, seals, dolphins, whales, and sea lions, these waters are remarkably diverse.

When we were on a cliff, these guys were very interested in a couple of dogs barking and playing in the surf. I think they wanted to join in the fun! 😂

Did you know that the Great Blue Heron often stands motionless as it scans for prey or wades belly deep with long, deliberate steps? They may move slowly, but Great Blue Herons can strike like lightning to grab a fish or snap up a gopher. In flight, look for this widespread heron’s tucked-in neck and long legs trailing out behind.

✨Artemis is the goddess of the hunt, wild animals, forests and hills, childbirth, virginity, archery, and the moon. She is also the protector of young children, particularly girls, and is known to bring and relieve disease in women. A second-generation goddess, she is the daughter of Zeus and the Titaness Leto and the older twin sister of Apollo.

As one of the three virgin goddesses, she never had a lover or children even though she drew the attention and interest of many gods and men. However, it was only her hunting companion, Orion, that won her heart. Tragically, Orion was accidentally killed by Artemis herself and she placed him in the sky as tribute to his memory.

Artemis is one of the most respected of all the ancient Greek deities. She had many temples across Greece with the most famous being The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus; one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Artemis is described as an independent, courageous, compassionate, and impulsive goddess with a mysterious, vet vengeful nature.
