Reno’s skin allergies started acting up again so we had to make an unscheduled visit to the vet. Thank you to Paws Of Honor and Old Dominion Animal Health Center for taking care of our guy and helping him live his best retired K9 life!

Did you know you can now sponsor a specific K9 through the program? Please consider supporting retired MWD Reno through the POH veterinary care program.

MWD Reno served 7 years as a patrol/explosive detection K9 for the U.S. Navy performing numerous overseas deployments and missions, including Vietnam, Saudi Arabia and Germany. Reno provided explosive detection, physical security and visual deterrence for two U.S. Presidents, Secretary of Defense, Secretary of State, Diplomats and Heads of State, as well as Military Officials. While in garrison, MWD Reno supported base security and anti-terrorism force protection postures for eight installations in the National Capital Region.

The work that these military working dogs and law enforcement K9s perform is crucial but also rigorous and requires special skills, intelligence and a high level of physical stamina. Along with their human counterpart, they endure long hours in extreme conditions and carry out missions that are both mentally and physically demanding and often times dangerous. The average age the military K9s retire is 11-12 years old and their health care is no longer covered by the government. Receiving the best health care during retired years is vital to a K9’s quality of life.

Paws of Honor has made a significant impact on the health care Reno receives now that he is retired. Not only does POH cover the cost of his medications and wellness vet visits but they also cover the costs of specialized vet care, including epidural injections, rehab and physical therapy, hydrotherapy, dental cleanings, emergency trips to the vet and more. All of this (combined with lots of love and care at home) has enabled Reno to have a very robust, happy life and continue having great adventures!
