What do I wear? What should I buy? How do I pose? What if I feel awkward? What if I don’t like the photos?

40 Over 40 Feature: Katie

There’s something Katie said during her exit interview that I haven’t stopped thinking about: “I felt worthy, which I thought was really just unexpected.”

Katie came into the 40 Over 40 Experience newly in her 40s and feeling better than she ever had. She wanted to capture this version of herself and to remember this moment when life felt exciting and, in so many ways, like it was just beginning.

But somewhere along the way, this experience became about more than beautiful photographs.

It was falling in love with her closet. Seeing herself with her hair and makeup done. Taking better care of herself because she had something exciting on the calendar. Spinning around in front of the mirror and thinking, “Oh my gosh… that’s me.”

And then seeing her final images and realizing, “that confident, empowered woman? That’s me.”

As someone who has struggled with people pleasing, Katie said seeing herself this way felt healing. She saw a woman who knows what she wants. A woman with confidence. A woman who takes up space.

And she can’t wait to show these photos to her daughter and nieces, to remind the younger women in her life that they get to decide how they want to live their lives, too.

If the thought of taking that many photos of yourself makes you a little nervous, you’re not alone 🫶🏽

My 40 Over 40 client came into the session not really knowing whether she’d actually love seeing herself in so many photos. But once we got started, she relaxed, had fun, and really enjoyed the experience of being in front of the camera.

And then came the reveal, when she got to see herself in a completely different way.

She loved SO many of her images that narrowing them down was the hardest part.

That’s one of my favorite parts of the 40 Over 40 experience. It’s not just about getting beautiful portraits. It’s about giving yourself permission to be seen, to celebrate who you are right now, and to have an experience that’s entirely about you.
