A few more shots from my Charleston trip- More brown pelicans, double-crested cormorants, and a surprise guest dolphin. Seeing that it was my first opportunity/attempt to photograph dolphins, I'm happy I snagged one pic with a face out of the water- it's tricky!

I leapt on the opportunity to visit one of my favorite cities last week (Charleston, SC) for a conference in wildlife forensic science but the first thing I did was head over to Charles Towne Landing to check out the wildlife.

I saw some pretty awesome critters: a young American alligator basking, a tricolored heron (we surprised each other), a northern red-bellied cooter (a terrapin- aquatic turtles with legs instead of flippers), and my first ever anhinga (sometimes called a snakebird). I heard tons of other birds singing but they refused to give me a photo op (looking at you specifically northern parula).

HELP!!! I can only pick one, drop a comment to let me know which pic is your favorite.

Today is International Vulture Awareness Day! I know I've shared my love for them before but I'm going to do it again. Repeatedly.
Did you know Old World Vultures and New World Vultures are not related and are the result of convergent evolution? So efficient, they evolved in different places of the world around the same time.
Humans don't always take a liking to the animals that aren't outrageously adorable but you've got to give vultures a lot of credit. They are the most efficient means of carcass removal from the environment, helping to prevent the spread of disease and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The majority of vulture species worldwide are threatened or endangered due to compounding issues including poisoning, intentional killing, and habitat loss.
Conservation isn't always about hugging the pretty trees (though you should try it). Most of it is about protecting our resources for future generations and preserving ecosystem functions. To save wildlife, we look at saving humans so, when you show some love for vultures, you show some love for yourself and your friends and family. ❤️

Finally getting around to pictures from my trip home to Boise in June (time is such crazy concept).
My favorite photo of a song sparrow I've ever taken, an American kestrel examining its feet, great blue herons at their rookery, a common nighthawk in flight, a male Gambel's quail in sentinel position, and a red-shafted northern flicker.

I acquired approximately 50 million mosquito bites to get this shot. That bird is the Acadian Flycatcher and it is about the size of a plum. They prefer undisturbed habitat and thus are indicators of a healthy habitat.

Can't believe I almost missed 😮
I found this adorable Western Fence Lizard in Idaho back in June on a nature exploration with my best friend ( ). It must have been basking before we found it, the sun was just going down. From far away it may look dull and blend in with the rocks but I love to see the blue and turquoise show up in the right light!

Scroll through to join me on my slow approach to the perch of a group of Northern Rough-winged Swallows. Sunrise on the Potomac at low tide means I can walk the sandbar and see these birds perched over the water where they swoop in and out, feeding on all the morning bugs. My gear is not fancy enough to catch them in flight (except by pure luck).

I finally got a decent shot of an orchard oriole back in June- a beautiful male perched at eye level. I saw a lot of different things that day but I also got a yellow-billed cuckoo and saw my first yellow-crowned night heron!

Not my favorite photo ever, not even close. However, when you just happen to be backyard birding on a random weekend morning and the elusive black-billed cuckoo passes though your yard, and this is the only picture you get, you roll with it. Did you know they have zygodactyl feet?! Two toes point forward and two point back, like owls and woodpeckers. Cuckoos love to eat caterpillars, even the spiny ones!
Habitat loss and pesticide use are contributing to this bird's steep decline.
