Large Format Photography DELAYED!

I have four large format cameras and also medium format film cameras in my collection, and over the years have collected over 20 lens-shutters for them.

Recently, I purchased a shutter speed tester and took the time to test every lens.

Every one of them had shutter speeds so inaccurate and slow to make them useless except to waste time and expensive film if used for photography.

So, they are slowly being sent off to technicians for cleaning and lubrication, which should restore their factory specs. Camera shutters are like mechanical watches, though not as complex or miniaturized, but require similar servicing.

It will take close to two years to service them all, unless I can learn how to do the work myself. The attached photo shows a simple shutter. The large mechanism at 8 O:Clock controls shutter speeds and is the main culprit requiring cleaning and lubrication.

'NEW' CAMERA
I used to have a Speed Graphic, the classic 4x5 film cameras used by the press back in the 1940's. Some of my best photos were taken with it.
The ribbon-winning portrait of B.J., a classic architectural photo of Philadelphia's City Hall taken at night, and the 'Golden at Dawn' photo of the Santuario of Saint Francis . . .
I sold it off back in the late-90's as I was upgrading and sorely missed it.
But I saw one on ebay and it looked pristine and was at a very good price. I bought it . . . it arrived yesterday and it is like a time capsule.
The leather, perfect. The internal focal plane curtain shutter works and was in perfect condition . . . no stains, no faded material. Like NEW!
The lens is perfectly clear and all the speeds work, but I have to take it apart to clean and lubricate to get it working smoother and with more snap! The speed adjust dial is very hard to turn, but some cleaning removing the old l**e and some new oil will set that right.
The camera was purchased new and put away, never used it seems.
Almost all of these cameras for sale are beaten to a pulp, run ragged with use and age.
So, looking forward to loading up some 4x5 film holders (have maybe $1000 worth of old color 4x5 film in the refrigerator) and take some pictures with it.

An old 'boot hill' cemetery South of Albuquerque, near the airport. Very crude markers, some made with hand formed concrete. Many from the 1800's.
Recently, there was a clean up with weeding, fresh crosses, and white paint.
I used an 'antique' photo filter on this version.

SUCCESS

A few weeks ago I restored my 20-year old fine art printer. Buying a new one was out of the question. I am retired, and a comparable replacement would be over $4000.
Due to work renovating part of my office I ignored the printer for 5 days, not good because the print head needs regular purging through maintenance cycles or use.
Yesterday I printed out this nozzle check and this is what you want to see. PERFECTION. Even after five days parked in the 'capping station,' all heads were wet and working to spec.

I am continuing to put my work out there. This is a 1972 photo of a Harley Sportster hardtail . . . the thing spit fire and dripped oil. See the detail. Phenomenal tone. The print is framed, 22x24. Also available are a few 8x10 fiber base darkroom prints.
Please contact for viewing.
Price of the framed print, $300, which is half what you'd pay a gallery.

More photos--I was set up for wedding photography, but the broken back caused me to almost not show up. I almost didn't make it through the entire wedding. So, I stopped doing weddings and started studying law.

I now have two printers that I refurbished. Now that I am retired, I can devote more time to photography. My studio was shut down by a corrupt landlord in 1998, and 76 days after I reopened in 2000 was hit by a car fracturing my back and neck, and breaking multiple bones . . . so I had to close down AGAIN!
I managed to photograph one wedding but my back gave out and I was put into physical therapy for 18 months. I worked my way up to bicycling 50 miles every other day.

Here are some sample photos. I have a backstock of prints, both silver darkroom chemical and K3 Ultrachrome pigment.

You are welcome to make an appointment to view them.

I cleaned up two old framed prints, one double matted and the other TRIPLE!
These were from my old studio and never displayed, so no light hitting them . . . full 100+ year archival life left. Acid Free materials and UV glass.

$300 each . . . first response gets the Triple Matte.

Original photo taken in 1996 with 4x5 film. Scanned in 2005 and printed using Epson K3 archival pigments.
