In 2017, I had the honor of talking to Samuel Holiday, a Navajo code talker during World War II.

We met during a Marine Corps Ball I was covering for the Rock Springs (WY) Rocket Miner.

I post this because today is National Navajo Code Talkers Day, a day to honor these gallant soldiers.

I have taken a lot of photos of two-lane highways and roadside America this month, but I think this is my favorite.

It is a pair of boots from an oilfield worker off Buck Jackson Road, about 30 miles west of Jal, New Mexico. It is off this road where people who worked in the oilfields hang up their boots when they decide it is time to move on.

In the comment section is a story I wrote about this road, which is named after a former rancher, rodeo announcer and sheriff, who lived in Pecos, Texas, and owned some land in southeast New Mexico.

Tonight I'll post two of my favorite July photos. Let's start with last week's sunrise outside Fort Sumner, NM.
