The highlight of my recent Monument Valley photo trip was a rough, two-plus hours guided excursion into the south area of the park to ascend onto Hunts Mesa, which offers a remarkable view back over the valley's notable formations, and is a bucket list destination for many landscape photographers.

As evening fell, clouds helped add some mood to the scene I and my fellow photographers tried to capture before we had to pile back into our guide's Suburbans and roll back down off of the mesa, and into the dark valleys below to head back for our lodgings.

Dusk at Coal Mine Canyon
Tuba City, AZ
March 13, 2026

Following a recent photography event in Monument Valley, I wanted to head on down to Tuba City to see a little bit about this town in the heart of Navajo country. In my plans were also to find some glimpse into Coal Mine Canyon, a unique badlands ravine that wanders between the Navajo and Hopi reservations about 15 miles east of the town. I found the place, and on one of the quietest and stillest of days in my recent memory, I sat on its rim and just gawked and rested for a few hours by this lovely view.

Twenty-five miles southwest of Buena Vista is an accessible ghost town perched at nearly 10,000 feet. Once a hub of activity in a momentary gold and silver mining boom in the Sawatch Range (circa, early 1890s), legislation around silver in 1893 led to a collapse in its price, which contributed to the town's rapid decline. Still, it survives as a curiosity destination today.

I spent late afternoon today with some members of the Enchanted Lens Camera Club, Albuquerque's largest photography fold, out with the birds. Dusk at these waterfowl complexes are always inspiring spectacles as the crane and snow geese feeding in the fields agitate and then launch in waves to find their nightly sanctuary near water.

In this curious frame, the crane before me had a visitor in their midst.

The Osage
Arkansas City, KS
October 24, 2025

My folks grew up and met in this small town in central south Kansas. It's a typical midwest town, once more prominent as a railroad hub, fallen today on some harder times. But it still has a main street, where decades ago, the teens once congregated and cruised on weekend nights, and where their parents went during the week to procure clothes or cleaning supplies or a couch or a cup of coffee in a store along its short but significant span.

At one time, back in the day, the uniquely vertical Osage was the fancy hotel in town- the place where a young newlywed couple might stay on their wedding night, or where a celebrity visiting to sing or stump at the local theater would stay. Today, the Osage is an affordable living apartment building, but it still has a regal look to it when you pass it cruising through town.

Dance of the Matachines
Old Town, Albuquerque, NM
November 1st, 2025

When I came across this photo from my morning visit to the Old Town "Day of the Dead" event on November 1st, I couldn't help but pause on it and consider all of the forces that must stir in this young woman's heart, performing a centuries-old dance from her culture and community in front of a circle of strangers before a centuries-old church in an otherwise mostly modern American city that in some ways is still part old Wild West, and in others, has helped throw the world into the atomic age.

On the edge of womanhood, pushed and pulled by tradition, aspiration, expectations, possibility, and the tides of influencer voices in modern media which encroach into every corner of the world, this young woman danced with her gaze often down, pensive, sharing these dances of devotion, which are part of her cultural identity, with cautious vulnerability, seemingly weighing the past and the future in her gift of guarded steps.

Colorado Highway 12, also known as the "Highway of Legends National Scenic Byway", is a pleasant spectacle looping west and south from Walsenberg down to Trinidad, Colorado. Along the way, this route enters forest and ascends the Sangre de Cristo range south of the Spanish Peaks, where it summits at Cuchara Pass, in a flourish of gold for a short season in the fall.
