Smallbany

Some call it Smallbany like it’s an insult, others as a playful dig. From up here, it just looks like it could be a charming little city. I like that better.

Taken on a very similar day to today, around 11 years ago. Had I known it would take me this long to get back to these photos…

Facing a decade-old backlog is daunting, but today’s latest tools are actually making the task realistic. For this shot, fixing the vertical perspective distortion left blank spaces in the bottom corners. Before, I would have fixed that with a mix of cloning and healing brushes. This time, I simply used AI to transparently fill those gaps.

I use generative tools very sparingly, and for this kind of correcting, not to alter the reality of the scene (unless it’s an explicitly creative project, for those I will call it out). But for speeding up a multi-year backlog? Worth.

My first trip since downsizing my entire setup. I went from two full-frame bodies (Nikon Z8 & Nikon D810) with lenses ranging from 14mm to 500mm, including the “holy trinity” of Nikon f-mount glass - to Fuji x100vi, which is simply a fixed lens, 35mm equivalent, crop sensor camera.

Objectively, this may sound like a downgrade, but I’m still not regretting it. I think it’s actually improving my photography. At a minimum, I’m enjoying the actual process of capturing images more.

Most of golden hour gets spent pointing the camera at the sunset itself. I've done it a thousand times, feels like. Last evening I turned around.

What is the last thing the sun wants to see before it sets?

It was this willow, just at the edge of this little lake. I found my spot between these two trees, used them to frame it, and took the shot.

Something is shifting in how I'm seeing things lately. More on that soon.
