Schuyler Mansion was a home to one of the founding fathers of the United States, Philip Schuyler, a Revolutionary War general and a U.S. senator. He and his wife Catherine raised eight children in this elegant Georgian-style house, which they completed in 1765 on an 80-acre tract of land, about half a mile outside the city of Albany.

Their daughter Elizabeth married Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury, in the mansion’s parlor in 1780. The mansion also witnessed many events of military and political significance during the war. Philip Schuyler operated a network of spies out of his home and survived a failed attempt to kidnap him by British loyalists in 1781. The mansion also hosted distinguished guests such as George and Martha Washington, Benjamin Franklin, the Marquis de Chastellux, and James Madison.

After Philip Schuyler’s death in 1804, none of Schuyler’s surviving children wanted the mansion, as they had already established themselves elsewhere, so the house became a home to a number of local residents and even hosted a presidential wedding, when Millard Fillmore married his second wife Caroline Carmichael in 1826. Starting 1886 the mansion was used as an orphanage for children under 7, and, when the orphanage ran out of space, was sold to the state of New York in 1911 to be opened to the public as a state historic site.

The old Central Warehouse and the new Albany Skyway in May 2022.

The Central Warehouse was built in 1927 as a refrigerated food-storage facility and at some point contained enough food to feed the city for months. During the Cold War, this 3-feet thick concrete and steel building also doubled as a fallout shelter. It became abandoned in 1990s and since then has changed ownership half a dozen times, each time with promises of renovation as retail or mixed-use space. When this photograph was taken, the county was in the midst of a legal battle for back taxes with the owner who bought it for a $1 in 2017. The county won and sold the building in Dec 2022 to Redburn and Columbia Development Cos in exchange for $50,000 and forgiving outstanding property taxes. There were no other bids for the property. Many have called for the building to be demolished instead for an estimated $1.5 million.

The Albany Skyway is a new elevated park that connects downtown Albany to the Hudson River waterfront. It was opened in April 2022 by Governor Kathy Hochul, who called it a “game-changer” and an “urban oasis”. The Skyway repurposed an old I-787 ramp, visible here, into a half-mile-long pedestrian and bicycle path that offers scenic views of the city and the river. It features pedestrian lighting, seating, planters, a shade structure and amphitheater-style seating. The Skyway also provides access to the Corning Riverfront Park and the Mohawk Hudson Hike Bike Trail. The project cost about $13 million and was funded by the state and federal grants.

The Livingston Avenue Bridge is a historic railroad bridge over the Hudson River that connects Albany and Rensselaer. It was built in 1901–02, replacing an earlier bridge from 1866 that was the first to span the river at this location.

The Livingston Avenue Bridge has a rotating swing span that allows large ships to pass through and is one of the few swing bridges that carry railroad traffic, as most swing bridges are designed for road or pedestrian use. The bridge is staffed 24h a day and carries Amtrak, CSX and CP Rail trains, making it a vital link for passenger and freight service in the state.

However, the bridge is also old and unreliable making trains cross one at a time at 15 mph. The New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) plans to replace the bridge with a new lift-type one that meets current railroad standards. Construction of the new bridge is set to start by the end of 2023, making this year the last chance to visit this unique historic landmark.

The Whipple Cast and Wrought Iron Bowstring Truss Bridge is a historic iron bridge near Normanskill Farm. It was built in 1867 by Simon De Graff of Syracuse, based on the design of Squire Whipple, a famous Albany engineer known as the father of iron bridge building in America. The bridge was originally located somewhere else, but was moved to its current site in 1899 to connect a farm with the main road. The bridge is one of the oldest and rarest examples of its type, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.

The "old" and "new" Delaware Ave bridges over the Normanskill.

The "old" bridge, paved with yellow bricks perhaps inspiring the yellow rick road in The Wizard of Oz and still visible today, was the main south-east way in and out of Albany during the 19th century.

1805 Delaware Turnpike Company is charted and builds a wooden bridge where the "old" bridge now stands.
1868 a freshet washes the wooden bridge out. By this time the
Turnpike Company had abandoned the road and the Town of Bethlehem built a new, two truss iron bridge.
1884 (1913?) Iron bridge is replaced by the "old" concrete bridge.
1929 a higher Normanskill Viaduct bridge is built.
1990 "old" bridge is closed to vehicular traffic.
1990s the Viaduct bridge is replaced by the "new" Delaware Ave bridge 50 feet north.

The Rensselaer Rail Station is 9th busiest station in the country, serving more than 800,000 people each year.

The current station was built in 2002 and is the third station on the site following 1968 and 1980 builds. The station is constructed of red brick and has a modern design with glass walls, a curved roof, and a clock tower standing two stories over the station proper. The station also features two-story tall windows on both ends and on its street façade, which allow natural light to flood the interior.

The Empire State Plaza is a stunning architectural and cultural landmark in the heart of New York's capital city. Built between 1965 and 1976, the plaza features a complex of state government buildings, a convention center, an ice rink, a performing arts center, a museum, and a collection of modern art. The plaza was named after Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller, who envisioned it as a way to revitalize downtown Albany and showcase the state's achievements.

Housing New York State Legislature, the grand Capitol building was completed in 1899 after 32 years, three teams of architects and cost of $25 million ($703mm modern equivalent).

The building was designed predominantly by Henry Hobson Richardson in the style later came to be known as Richardsonian Romanesque.

The 166-foot Eastern Staircase (visible here) was added to stop the building from sliding downhill due to the massive weight and unstable foundation. The foundation issues also prevented completion of the central tower and the dome leaving a central open court.

In 1911, a massive fire destroyed building's southwest corner and almost its entire collection of the state library. It took three months to clear the rubble and then a year to rebuild it, at a cost of $5mm ($103mm today).
