Sometimes when I take a photo I don't really get to see all the fine details until I get back home and start working on the photograph. This is a perfect example of this issue. I saw what I thought were tall grass / reeds in the water right near the bend. I set up my composition to kind of highlight them. Not that they were important but it was a nice touch. I get home start working on the photo and I realize its a lump of discarded barb wire. Huh. Well there you go. I now have the honor to present to you the beautifully framed trashed barb wire! 🤣

I took this photo the night of March's full moon. I had intended to set up and get a good photo of the full moon, but this sunset stole my attention at the beginning. I'm not going to complain either, it's a beautiful scene of the San Luis Valley

A few months back I submitted some of my photos into a large photography contest put on by shootandshare.com. This particular photo, "Wrath", did amazing. It placed 26th out of 28552 in the landscape category. It has been a great experience and I feel very honored to have placed that high in the category. A few of my other photos were able to get into the top 10%, 20%, and 30%, but this one was my champ!

The 2019 Blood moon was a challenge to photograph. For starters it was cold, -5°F cold. The second part is that I always forget how fast the moon actually moves when you're trying to photograph it. Usually, you just slow your shutter speed down to capture your shot, but the moon moves so fast that a couple second exposure unfortunately has motion blur. This first photo had great colors, but motion blur. The second photo is much sharper but I lost the moment for the best colors. Regardless of my photographic success, I love witnessing these events!

2019 Calendar

The 2019 SLV calendars are here! I've ordered a second batch of calendars since the first batch disappeared almost overnight! I have a few in stock still, but if you place an order after those are out there may be a slight delay in getting them to you. Put in the order online if you'd like a calendar. Hey All! A very Happy Thanksgiving to you all! I am very grateful for the support and encouragement that you all have given me since I've started publishing my works. Thank you! I've got some exciting news to announce! I've finally received my 2019 calendars and they are ready to be sold. I'll be selling the calendars personally as well as through the Narrow Gauge Book Cooperative. Narrow Gauge Book Coop will also start selling my postcards! Stop by to check them out! You'll be able to purchase calendars through me, but I won't have that ready for a couple more days. Happy Thanksgiving Day!

Been rolling an idea around in my head. If I were to sell paper spiral wire bound calendars of my photos would you want to purchase one? It depends on the quantity I order, but I bet I could get pricing around $15

Letting Go

New Blog Post about accepting change and letting go. This beautiful scene unexpectedly forced me to think about changes that I wasn't ready to address. Be sure to check out the full-sized image; it is worth it! How do you handle change? Do you thrive off the chaos? Do you avoid it at all costs?

"Letting Go" …Ironically this deep thought came from watching a sunset illuminate this patch of wild grass. The momentary light was beyond beautiful. The light's effect was warm, gentle, and calming. A gentle breeze blew through the grass, crickets chirped further into the grass, giving

I've been sitting on this photo for far too long. I am so happy and proud of this photo. I've been hesitant to share it with the world, but I've never really known why. It's odd I know. Anyway, here it is! I worked with the amazing Hope Quintana on this photo. I had an idea of what I wanted to pull out of the photo shoot, but interestingly the photos took their own path. But I love what they have become. I feel this is some of my best portrait work so far. I'd love to hear your thoughts. Like it? Love it? Hate it? Tell me! Here's a teaser of the photo shoot. More to come! Edit: forgot the photo. Whoops!

Here is my limited edition photo in all its glory! I donated this piece to the Alamosa Chamber of Commerce Art Gala fund raiser. This was taken north of Monte Vista over looking the Rio Grande River. It was such a beautiful sunset. I did have to fight off a horde of mosquitoes. I'm not joking either, at one point I looked at my hand holding the camera and I had hundreds of the little buggers feasting away on my hands. Thankfully no long term side affects ;). Like and Share if you feel it has earned it!

"Wrath"
To me there are two parts to photography: Getting the shot. Then developing the shot. I got this shot and I had quickly dismissed it as junk. The original photo was less than ideal. I couldn't make out any clear details in the cloud bank over Mt Blanca. Everything was horribly dull and muted. Not sure why I even started working on this photo. But as I did I was able to coax out amazing drama and a story. To me this is the type of photo that has such a strong story to tell, and each viewer will hear their own story. I would absolutely love it if you shared your story in the comments! After a couple of days I'll share mine. If you feel this has earned it please give it a like and or a share.

I finally had a moment to process some of my Sandhill Crane photos and I have to say, I am excited to share them! Daylight savings time and a lack of coffee certainly made starting that morning difficult. But it was such a beautiful morning. The fog, the lighting, and even the bitter cold wind worked out perfectly to let me get this shot. I absolutely love this photo! If you like the photo give it a like and share it with your friends!

Sand Hill Cranes in Monte Vista Wildlife Refuge

Had some fun this past Monday. I didn't enjoy standing around in the blowing snow, but I got some great material. It was so incredible to watch the flock of cranes fly into the air. I suspect something spooked them and they all took off. They ended up circling around the field for about 10 minutes and eventually landed in a field next to where I originally started. Enjoy! Like and share if you enjoyed it!

I got a very lucky shot the other morning. I was out scouting around for Sand Hill Cranes and saw this small heard of deer at the Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge. I started snapping some casual shots of the deer and then some Sand Hill Cranes flew in over them. I think this photo really encapsulates The San Luis Valley! Sand Hill Cranes, Deer, Sangre De Cristo Mountains and Sand Dunes.

Monte Vista Crane Festival featured some of my work on their page! If you haven't checked out the crane fest in Monte, It's a lot of fun!

Only 22 days to Crane Fest! Check out these amazing photos by Kyle Burnett, marketing officer at the San Luis Valley Federal Bank in Monte Vista. Kyle's suggestions for great crane pics: patience, perseverance and multiple shots; know the crane's habits (when they eat, roost, etc.); and use a higher mm zoom lens for close-ups, as cranes are shy.

My 2018 Lunar Eclipse (and Blue Moon and Super moon) adventure! I knew going out for a photo was a gamble since there was a light cloud cover over the San Luis Valley. It wasn't enough to keep me indoors in my comfy bed though.

Sometimes we focus too much on the negative that we feel is right around the corner. But how often do we ever pay attention to what is in front of us right now? Find the small things. Slow your mind down and find the joy that is in front of us right now. There is always something to find. This field of grass and cattails was it for me. The clouds were heavy and oppressive, but the grass was moving so gently and beautifully in the wind. The light would catch on cattail leaves and reveal a golden color that forced me to smile. There is always uncertainty in our future. But there always joy and beauty in front of us, if we look for it. If you feel this photo has earned it, like and share it! Thank you!

I had a ton of fun with this family portrait shoot! They had a sort of family reunion and wanted to get some family photos while everyone was visiting. The young kids were full of energy and excitement and it really made my job easy to get their photo (of course there certainly was some coaxing here and there). Thank you so much for letting me be part of your family get together!

I love this mountain. Powerful, massive, and always under a constant state of visual change. You could watch the mountain every day and it would always put on a new show. That makes it incredibly fun to photograph, also very disappointing if you don’t have a camera with you when you witness

Bird Fight!

I was enjoying this morning's fresh air and I decided to goof around with some video. I discovered that if you slow down bird chirps, they sound like some sort of alien planet. I'm on my way to becoming a sound effects guy now! lol. Also, I could use some opinions on ID'ing these guys. I think they are Pine Warblers, but those only seem to be limited to the East coast. Thoughts?

Oh it is so beautiful out there today. I love this weather. I believe the universe is taking great pleasure in tormenting me with this weather today. I’m at work on lunch and I see this beautiful scene just calling to me. Of course I only have my cell phone on me. So dear universe, if you wouldn’t mind, could we get another day just like today when I have time off and I’m free? Thanks so much!

The part that always amuses me about the Sand Hill Cranes is when they fly in to land. It always feels like they are going in for a hard crash landing. This is such a great time of year for photographs. Drastic weather and temperature swings. I Love it! On a whim, I got out and started driving around. This storm had been brewing all day and I wanted to see what I could find. I managed to get myself underneath the storm clouds that were moving in (first photo). Then I headed South and got out underneath the same storm front. This time I was looking East and the sunset was trying to poke through a set of clouds giving this soft pink glow (second photo). Finally, I got quite a bit South of the storm front and got this last shot while I was North (third photo). The last photo is grainy because is was nearly dark by the time I got the shot. Oh! I also discovered a very curious horse. I named him Fred. He was a very friendly Neigh-bor! Get it? Hah. Ok. Yea, I’m done here. Like and or share if you feel this has earned it!
