The Texas Professional Photographers Association is the largest state affiliate of the Professional Photographers of America with hundreds of top photographers in Texas as well as other states around the country. Founded in 1898, TPPA has served as the voice of professional photographers and photographic enthusiasts and has set the standards for photographic education for generations. TPPA members

also receive an award-winning, bi-monthly magazine, The Photographer, with informative articles to keep them on the cutting edge of today’s technology and to keep you informed of the latest techniques and marketing ideas.

Join your friends and make new ones as TPPA takes in the State Fair of Texas. We will meet at the main gate at 11am. Once inside, you are free to roam the fair.

We will have scheduled meet up times throughout the day to eat and see what you discovered. Take part in our photo safari and compete for prizes.

Open to all TPPA members and guests. Tickets are only $20 each for you and your guests (Save $5 each) when you order by September 13th with the link below.

Catch up with us on the TRE train to catch a DART train to the main gate. Easy traveling and you don't have to pay to park! (Train fare not included.)

Roy Nierdieck takes the July/August 2026 Cover of The Photographer Magazine with his image, “In the Shelter of Her Gaze”.

The image was captured during his 2025 TPPA Workshop at the Smith Oaks Rookery in High Island, Texas. What makes this photograph especially memorable is the emotional connection it creates between the viewer and the subject. Rather than focusing on dramatic flight or action, Nierdieck chose to emphasize the quieter intimacy of parental protection and dependence. Workshops such as this remind us that successful wildlife imagery depends on far more than long lenses and technical settings. Patience, behavioral observation, timing, and an understanding of light are often the defining elements that transform a simple wildlife record into a storytelling image capable of resonating with viewers long after the shutter is released.

Here are a few outstanding images by TPPA Member, Shelton Malzar , from the TPPA Cavern Adventure to Inner Space and Longhorn Caverns. TPPA had the opportunity to enter the caverns outside the hours for public entry. The cavern operators allowed us to bring in tripods and supplemental lighting (non-flash) to create one-of-a-kind images from inside these magnificent treasures.

TPPA Member, Ken Stanback created this other-worldly image at the TPPA Cavern Adventure to Inner Space Caverns and Longhorn Caverns. The private TPPA tour allowed photographers to photograph inside the cave with tripods and supplemental lighting.

This image inside Inner Space Caverns was captured with a light source and a blue gel over the light. Great image, Ken.

PPA National Award Recipient, Brandon Cheek

In 1985, viewers were glued to the television as MacGyver engineered solutions, built seemingly impossible contraptions, and fixed anything that needed to be fixed in order to save the day. In 2013, the Texas School of Professional Photography turned to Brandon Cheek for such heroics. Ask former Texas School Director, Don Dickson, and he will tell you, “Brandon can engineer anything, build anything, and fix anything we need.”

Brandon started as a Texas School Wrangler back when the school was in College Station, Texas, many years before he was brought into the current Texas School office. There, he did a variety of tasks including dealing with IT problems, computer connections, sound system issues, and more. He really is the definition of a “Jack of All Trades.” In that role, Brandon designed the previous iconic Texas School Logo and published an underground newsletter for Texas School that was beloved by the instructors and attendees called, The Dark Slide. He even invented and fabricated locks for the ballroom doors that impressed the hotel staff.

Today, Brandon still works behind the scenes to keep Texas School operating at a high level of efficiency. But, it is not his unique skill sets that really stand out, it is how he can manage to take on so many projects at once and never get flustered, operating on an even keel, and doing it all with a soft temperament. He is a true example of what it means to provide service to our association. Just last fall, he co-hosted the TPPA Road Trip to Caddo Lake. But, as depicted in the photograph above, one of Brandon’s favorite photographic ventures was to Iceland.

The inscription on this coveted award simply reads, “For meritorious contributions to professional photography.” The words are few, but the meaning is deeper than any words can express. This year, the Texas Professional Photographers Association is proud to present the PPA National Award to a very deserving Brandon Cheek.
