A morning in the Maasai Mara is full of surprises. Before we even entered the national reserve, we came across this lion finishing off a wildebeest. Patiently lurking around him were hyenas and jackals awaiting their turn. It was such a cool sighting!

The king of the savanna. We saw this handsome lion at first light just minutes from exiting our camp. We haven’t even entered the Mara yet when we came across this guy eating a wildebeest, with hungry hyenas and jackals patiently waiting their turn. The lion even let a jackal snag a few bites alongside him - which I found very interesting! When the lion decided he had enough, the scavengers waisted no time before descending on the remaining carcass. Couldn’t ask for a better first sighting of the day!

The sun was just barely peeking from the horizon, so these were shot at 1/200.

A mother clutches her nursing baby.

These olive baboons have strong family networks that exist on a hierarchal system. With this being said, they are also pretty democratic - making decisions as a group instead of relying completely on one dominant member.

Did you know that baboons sometimes hunt smaller animals?

This is why we wake up at 5am for our morning safari. How could anyone want to miss this?! The sunrises are stunning as is, but when you get an animal perfectly silhouetted against the sun, it becomes pure magic.

We only have a limited time to photograph this kind of scene before the vibrant colors fade away, so it is always our mission to find a subject to photograph in it. And there are few subjects more iconic than a giraffe at sunrise.

Join me this October, and photograph these beautiful scenes in the Maasai Mara. There is just one spot remaining! Comment “safari” if you would like to receive more details on the trip!

One of the things I was most hoping to see on my trip to the Mara was a male maned lion - awake. I never expected to see so many! Before this trip, I’ve only ever seen juveniles or sleeping males. They are just so majestic!

Beauty and strength.
Each of the big cats are so unique and beautiful in their own ways, but there is just something about a leopard that is so breathtaking. The aloofness, the intensity of the eyes, the mesmerizing rosettes, their impeccable climbing abilities, and the amount of danger packed inside a smaller frame truly make them one of a kind.

This lovely cat was found asleep on an embankment before she woke up to look for a snack.

Cheetahs are just so gorgeous. This particular one was quite active this morning, jumping from termite mound to termite mound looking for food. He just couldn’t seem to sit still!
