The Mellon Foundation Is Giving Out $125 Million in Grants for Creative Projects Addressing the ‘Dehumanization’ of U.S. Criminal Justice

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation is putting $125 million toward artistic efforts by and about people impacted by the U.S. carceral system.

The multiyear grant-making initiative, called Imagining Freedom, aims to support “arts and humanities organizations that engage the knowledge, critical thinking, and creativity of millions of people and communities with lived experience of the U.S. criminal legal system and its pervasive forces of dehumanization, stereotyping, and silencing,” according to an announcement from the non-profit organization. Grantees will include institutions that span geographies, generations, and disciplines.

Wet Paint in the Wild: Chloe Wise Revels at Eckhaus Latta’s Spring Show and Feasts With Eric of ‘Tim and Eric’

Welcome to Wet Paint in the Wild, the freewheeling—and free!—spinoff of Artnet News Pro’s beloved Wet Paint gossip column, where we give art-world insiders a disposable camera to chronicle their lives on the circuit. To read the latest Wet Paint column, click here (members only).

What a force for fun and beauty Chloe Wise is in the art world. To know the painter is to admire her energetic and playful portraiture, and to love her is to have tried some of her homemade focaccia. As she is an artist with hands in many different pots, I gave her a camera for the beginning of fashion week to see what its chaotic whirl looks like from her perspective. She did not disappoint. Take it away, Miss Wise!

Museums Have Artists in Residence. The Brooklyn Museum Asks, Why Not Entrepreneurs in Residence?

Last year, the Brooklyn Museum enlisted retail mogul Rachel Shechtman for their inaugural two-year Entrepreneur in Residence (EIR) initiative. With a mission of fostering experimentation and entrepreneurialism within the museum as well as tapping expertise from professionals outside the art world, the theme of the first EIR program is “The Museum of the Future, Today.” Engaging with departments across the museum, Shechtman will cultivate and facilitate innovation in areas such as visitor experience, retail, and programming, as well as create a sustainable framework for future EIR participants.

A Gallery Show in Los Angeles Pays Tribute to the Late, Great Brazilian Designer Fernando Campana and His Whimsical Furnishings

Working across mediums, Humberto and Fernando Campana took the design world by storm. Notable concepts include the loose cotton rope Vermelha Chair—produced for Italian manufacturer Edra—and the Favela Chair (1991), now owned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, created from wood offcuts not unlike the dwellings that define those urban areas. Weaving plush stuffed animals—Disney and KAWS characters—into overflowing armchairs became their calling card.

See How Artist Brigitte D’Annibale Transformed an Abandoned Malibu Home Into a Spectacular Immersive Installation

Six months ago, the artist Brigitte D’Annibale took cultural strategist Vajra Kingsley to see an abandoned home in Malibu’s Point Dume.

With its sweeping views of the Santa Monica Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, this was where D’Annibale wanted to realize a dream of some 30 years: to create immersive environment that would bridge art, architecture, design, and the natural world.
