“More than 20 years ago, I created a series of photographs that became the Universe of Ukrainian Bread project. In a small essay accompanying the series, I wrote what I wanted to convey through those images. Many, however, suggested exhibiting these photos in various other contexts — starting from the artificial famine of Soviet times to the historical significance of Ukrainian agriculture. Diverse interpretations of visual works different from the author's notion are common in art. During the war, when n**i russia attacked Ukraine, I also took a new approach to my series. I felt even more intensely that the bread which I depicted in the Universe of Ukrainian Bread series, has a connection with our past and our identity. The destruction of Ukrainian grain and bread is a part of the russian den**ification. The enemies, the russians, sense that our creative archetype is beyond their grasp, and hence they aim to annihilate it.”

Український хліб | Ukrainian bread

From photographer’s notes:
“.. how it turns out that bread loaves are baked in industrial quantities in factories, and each loaf has its own unique surface pattern. Like human fingerprints, like the shape of a human ear..”
“.. how it is possible to connect such opposites in the concept of “bread” – the most wide-spread, common, daily and repeatedly used product is at the same time the sacred one – in the history of civilization, in work, in religion (the body of Christ, “not one bread”, “Bread and spectacles”, “bread is the head of everything” and so on)?”
“.. bread appeared a far long time ago. In my opinion, the technology of its manufacture is not easy, especially for primitive man. It turns out that bread was known on different continents, almost simultaneously, without communication. It seemed that people got information about bread from outside, from space. Maybe the idea is “crazy”, but it gave impetus to my choice of visual solution when creating this series of photographs”
