Naturally, it is very common to use the word “ocean” in expressions that describe very large, seemingly limitless, things. For example, my love of my reading is as big as the ocean! I really love to read.

You can also say “as deep as the ocean” to describe something very vast and intense. For example, if you love someone deeply, you can say your love for them is as deep as the ocean. It seems as if it has no end.

Saying that something is as deep, big, or wide as the ocean is a simile. A simile compares things using “like” or “as.”

On this program, we explore words and expressions in the English language. Today we talk about the ocean.

Oceans are amazingly large, deep bodies of water. When talking about some of the deepest parts of the world’s oceans, much is still not known. With something so big and full of wonder, it is not surprising that English has several expressions that use the word “ocean.”

For starters, we can simply say “oceans of” something to mean “a lot” something. For example, Timothy will have oceans of problems if he does not find a job soon. He is racking up oceans of debt.

Agus Ngurah Krisna Kepakisan is head of the West Bali National Park. He believes the creation and spread of villages around the park have led to a successful breeding program. Villagers received help in getting permits and bred Bali mynahs there.

“With the community being the breeders ... they are helping us to take care of the birds that exist in nature,” he said.

Squires noted that there is clear evidence some released birds have produced young ones. “So that leads me to believe that the population is certainly self-sustaining to an extent,” he said.

The breeding program’s results can be seen throughout the park, where Kepakisan says 420 Bali mynahs now live.

In the 1980s, an organization now called BirdLife International started to work with the government to launch a breeding program for the birds.

Breeders can seek government permits to breed the birds. If approved, they are given mynahs by the government and could keep 90 percent of the baby birds for private sale. The remaining birds are released at West Bali National Park, where they will be closely watched by park officials.

Early mynah releases faced problems. Some birds were infected with a parasite that often caused death; others were killed by natural predators. Illegal hunting also continued — and the national park’s breeding center was even robbed at gunpoint, with nearly 40 birds stolen.

Still, it was impossible to steer clear of awkward conversations, and assumptions, about my appearance. I laughed it off when a colleague asked me for w**d, because I wanted to believe it had nothing to do with my race. “You like Dave Chappelle?” a white male student asked one day in the lab. I tensed and chose to lie. “Nah, never heard of him,” I mumbled. He pulled up a Chappelle skit on YouTube. “Check this one out,” he said. “It’s about a white family with the last name Niggar!”

I swallowed my anger and excused myself to the women’s restroom, where I knew I’d be alone. There, I stared at my reflection, wondering what I had done to make him so audacious, and I said out loud the things I wished I had said to him.

The Grandaddy of Them All. Confirmation bias refers to our tendency to search for and favor information that confirms our beliefs while simultaneously ignoring or devaluing information that contradicts our beliefs.

For example, Person A believes climate change is a serious issue and they only search out and read stories about environmental conservation, climate change, and renewable energy. As a result, Person A continues to confirm and support their current beliefs.

Meanwhile, Person B does not believe climate change is a serious issue, and they only search out and read stories that discuss how climate change is a myth, why scientists are incorrect, and how we are all being fooled. As a result, Person B continues to confirm and support their current beliefs.
