Eliza Powell Photography

Eliza Powell Photography Tanzania based professional photographer / filmmaker Here, I work as a professional photographer and filmmaker.

My background as a photographer started in the early 90s working as a picture editor on the London Picture Desk of Reuters News Agency. It was an eventful time to be involved in the news: the first Gulf War had just started, the situation in Somalia was taking a turn for the worst and in England, the Poll Tax Riots were in all the headlines. My four years with Reuters remain some of the very best

of my life, working with and learning from some of the best photojournalists in the world. After traveling through Russia and the Ukraine, followed by Southern Sudan (as it was then known), a supposedly short stint in Bosnia Herzegovina, in 1994, lasted for two years. That led to Africa, the continent where I have remained for the last 20 years, Botswana first and now Tanzania where I live on a coffee farm on the slopes of Kilimanjaro. My work has been commissioned by the World Food Programme, UNFAO, WaterAid, IRIN.org as well as other international NGOs with projects throughout East Africa. I am also a contributing photographer for Getty Images. Other assignments range from capturing life on safari for safari companies who want to update their marketing and promotional materials, to commercial shoots for hotels, restaurants and schools. I am based just outside of Arusha, northern Tanzania but am available to travel to any location.

The Conservation Conundrum - Putting People First. Episode 3, Conservation

So all good things must come to an end and this is now the final episode of our three-part series The Conservation Conundrum. Over the period of a year, we followed and documented safari company Nomad Tanzania
and their community projects across the length and breadth of Tanzania.

We met extraordinary people and heard their stories, different lives, challenges and successes. After documenting Nomad’s projects based around Health and Education, we looked at their work in Conservation, most particularly how can you solve the conservation conundrum so that man and wildlife can live side by side safely and without conflict.

Alongside Nomad, and safari guide/conservationist we learned that listening to nature and understanding its lessons is key. Pius Masubo is an ex-poacher who now works with Nomad as a walking scout and soon to be guide. He and senior guide Kakae Wilfred Saiteu are on the front lines of the work that Nomad does, across all of its camps and areas. Spending time with them, listening to their perspectives and experiences, was a real privilege that helped to shape the story.

With many thanks to Anthea Rowan and LucyCole and all at Nomad for their help in the making of this series.

We believe that for us to make a meaningful contribution to the conservation of our wildlife, we need to take care of the needs of our people, always making sure that it is them that feel the benefit from keeping wild places safe. Please watch our film, it tells our story, and the story of the peopl...

Wrapping up the last edits on the final episode of The Conservation Conundrum, a series of short films I shot and produced with Anthea Rowan for Nomad Tanzania
.

Working with these two superstars was a real highlight – Nomad safari guide and conservationist Jules Richard Knocker
and walking scout Pius Masubo – it all came together in front of my lens, the story that Anthea and I spent a year crafting. How do you solve the conservation conundrum so that man and wildlife can live side by side safely and without conflict; learning lessons from nature is key. Final film coming out soon.
