Grey woodpeckers are specialised back-foragers, having chisel-tipped bills, long barbed tongues, and stiff pointed tail feathers which provide support on tree trunks. Their strong zygodactyl toes with sharp nails enable them to cling to smooth surfaces. The grey woodpecker is golden-olive and displays bright red rump and upper tail coverts in flight. They are fairly common in savanna and open woodland. The crown and nape of male is usually red; the head is grey, entirely so in female; back and wings golden olive.
