Some days you attend an event as a guest. But when the camera is part of who you are, it never really stays in the bag.

This was a Mahari ceremony for two people, whose family we have had the honour of knowing and documenting for the better part of a decade. When they invited us to simply show up and celebrate, we did. The camera just came along.

What unfolded was everything a Mahari should be. A brown theme carried across every generation in the room. African fabric flowered the event. Live music, matarumbeta, that moved people out of their seats. And two people surrounded by everyone who loves them most.

These images were felt.

Congratulations and 🀍

We asked Google about Julius Matage.

It said: β€œThere is limited public information available regarding a prominent public figure by the exact name Julius Matage.”

Today we are fixing that.

Julius is the founding partner of : a Tanzanian fine jewellery brand built on ethically sourced gemstones, traced directly from Tanzanian women miners to the final piece. Award-winning. Industry-recognised. Proudly Tanzanian.

But Julius? The world has been quiet about
Julius.

He works behind the scenes to make sure his co-founder has something to show, something to sell, and a story worth telling.

I have known this team since the early days, when WoowMe was beadwork handled by Mecktilder and a shared vision that had not yet found its full shape. I have watched this brand grow from that into something Tanzania should be proud of.

When co-founders complement each other, there is movement. Maybe slow. But always in the right direction.

Julius, the spotlight is yours today.

She walked in and the studio already knew this was going to be a good one.

Irene listened to every direction, then added a little of herself to each frame. That is what separates a portrait from a photograph.

Dental student. Entrepreneur. One of the minds behind .market, a marketplace app built for university students across Tanzania.

And yes β€” she is just getting started.

Lenin came with one outfit.

We made it work three different ways.

That’s not a limitation β€” that’s a brief.

Lenin Lutaaya Felician is a Cultural Anthropologist
and Doctoral Researcher. He’s spent years excavating
the past, curating it, and now asking living
communities about it β€” specifically the Hadza
hunter-gatherers of Tanzania, and how they hold
onto who they are when the world keeps shifting.

His work is about making sure the people behind
the heritage are never invisible.

We just made sure he wasn’t either.

8 people. 3 cities. One studio. No client brief.

The day started early. People arrived late, because that is how creative days begin.

But the moment everyone arrived, the room shifted. Makeup brushes moved. Irons ran. Fabric was held against skin tones - colours assessed and matched before a single pin was placed. And with every minute that passed, something in the room kept building.

The wrapping is not a quick process. Each fabric carries its own story. Colours assessed, designs decided on the spot, in real time. No template. No repeat. Just hands, fabric, and years of practice.

Not a photoshoot. A room full of specialists doing exactly what they do best.

We asked everyone the same two questions.

What did you do? And what did it feel like?

8 people. 3 cities. One studio day in Dar es
Salaam. This is what they said.

Final images dropping soon.

She said something that stayed with us.

β€œMy look should not be limited to what I do.”

Mugore is an engineer. She works in construction: concrete, steel, site boots, and water. The kind of work that has nothing to do with a pretty dress and high heels.

But she does not see those as opposites.

She came in not to escape who she is at work, but to make space for the part of herself that work does not get to see.

The feminine energy. The fashion. The joy of getting dressed up with nowhere particular to be except in front of a camera that is paying full attention.

That is what a portrait session should do.

Not replace who you are in the world. Give room to who you are
when the world is not watching.
