”Wilderness gave us knowledge. Wilderness made us human. We came from here. Perhaps that is why so many of us feel a strong bond to this land called Serengeti; it is the land of our youth.”

The Serengeti sun setting on the cradle of mankind (can you spot the big cat?)…

When the world is a whirlwind, stop in your tracks, look around your kingdom, connect to the sacred ground. Are you on the right path? Or are your chosen, future prints hidden in the undergrowth?

This is a place that amazed me with its magic of both terrestrial and marine life and jaw-dropping landscapes. Hippos wandering the streets of St. Lucia, crocodiles and turtles along, and near, the beaches, as well as an abundance of other wildlife 🦛🐊🇿🇦

The beauty and biological wealth of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, made it a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999, South Africa’s first. The park is now South Africa’s second largest protected area after the Kruger National Park, incorporating the country’s largest marine protected area – also the only Transfrontier marine protected area as it joins Mozambique’s protected waters.

The Park contains three major lake systems, eight interlinking ecosystems, 700 year old fishing traditions, most of South Africa’s remaining swamp forests, Africa’s largest estuarine system, 530 bird species and 25,000 year-old coastal dunes – among the highest in the world. The name iSimangaliso means miracle and wonder, which aptly describes this unique place.

One of my absolute favorites in the African wild, although fairly common in both savanna and mopane woodland.

Greater Blue-Eared Starling (Lamprotornis chalybaeus), Kruger National Park, South Africa 🇿🇦

The glossy feathers make it hard to capture a single photo that shows the shine in all its glamour, but is evenly and perfectly exposed. The magic of this stunning bird can only really be appreciated in real life with the twinkling of the sunlight dancing in its plumage with each little movement 🪶

Never judge a friend by his color... Lilac-breasted Roller (Coracias caudata), Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya. One of the prettiest wild places on Earth, as well as spectacular avian life, it also hosts the Great Migration, the largest congregation of mammals in the world 🌿🐦

On the lookout... White-breasted Cormorant (Phalacrocorax lucidus), Lake Naivasha, Great Rift Valley, Kenya. A birder's ultimate paradise and the most beautiful lake I've sailed on.
