I don’t quite get into personal things on this account because I would rather show my photography, but I thought it was important to tell you why I’ve been mostly quiet on Instagram since Christmas Eve.

On Christmas Eve, I woke up with a fever and a sore throat. I took some Tylenol and rested for the day, thinking it was probably the flu. I didn’t see a doctor until the end of that week, and the doctor agreed it was the flu and prescribed me some cough medicine.

While I was stricken with what I thought was the flu, I also suffered through a violent coughing fit. Lying in bed worsened that cough, to the point I had trouble sleeping. The cough medicine and constant Tylenol doses did nothing, so I suspected my sickness was worse than the flu. I predicted it was pneumonia, so I went to the emergency room on December 30.

I expected to just stay in the emergency room and get some antibiotics to remedy my sickness, but after doing some tests, the doctors in the emergency room decided to admit me to the hospital. I spent New Year’s Eve in bed watching Ryan Seacrest and the ball drop at Times Square, and on New Year’s Day morning, I watched the Tournament of Roses Parade for the first time in a decade.

After five days of IV injections, oxygen treatments, and feeling helpless, the doctors discharged me from the hospital. I’ve never felt so sick in my life, and I thought that I was going to die at one point.

I may be known as Ed the Animal, but even animals aren’t invincible to illness and other maladies. While I don’t feel 100% myself, my health is improving daily, and I am glad I listened to my gut. If I didn’t, I probably would not be alive today.

Even with this terrible health scare and the catastrophic fires happening close to where I live, I am determined to get back to doing what I love and create art in 2025.

want to thank my creative friends and supporters who checked in while I was ill. I’m happy that people care. For those who know about my situation just now, I appreciate your support and patience as I try to get back to normal.

Please take care of yourselves and enjoy some tea.

I'm probably going to write a longer post about it when I launch my newsletter soon, but if you're wondering what one of my main motivations for doing photography is, I'll tell you. I want to make good work so people can look back with pride and pass it down generation after generation.

By the way, Men I Trust is my musical obsession right now.

This is an appreciation post for my friend and long-time collaborator Lucy. I'm happy to have worked with her for around a decade now, and this is something from our recent shoot in her state of Pennsylvania! She did a fantastic job editing this in color (and you can see the b&w version on her account).
