Amid the lush canopy of Taiwan’s Tianxiang Recreation Area in Taroko Gorge, a young rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) pauses mid-adventure, its bright eyes peeking through fresh spring leaves. These adaptable primates roam from dense forests to city parks, but here in the gorge, they seem perfectly at home among the whispering branches and rushing river below. I had been following rustles in the foliage for a while before this little one swung into view, striking a pose that felt both playful and watchful. The afternoon light spilled through the leaves, turning the scene into a vivid green stage for a moment of wild beauty.

Caught this heart warming moment of a Formosan macaque family in Tainxang, Taiwan, where their playful and cheeky nature comes alive. These clever monkeys, often seen around local 7/11 store are infamous for their cunning tactics. My friend Claire once had a laughable encounter where a macaque nabbed her banana, leaving just the peel on her head! My only disappointment is that I missed this encounter by just a few minutes.
Following this, I learned that these monkeys carry herpes, highlighting the complex realities of wildlife interactions. Affectionately the monkeys became known as the "7/11 herpes monkeys band”

After an earthquake, with the shops closed and food rationed, the monkeys' behaviour shifted. They returned to their natural ways, foraging from trees and bonding over grooming sessions. This serene moment, captured from across our accommodation, shows a mother feeding her young while the family groomed each other, a poignant reminder of the intricate relationship between animals and humans.

Nestled in the verdant ponds on the way to Beitou's hot springs, this is a Chinese stripe-necked turtle, also known as the golden thread turtle (Mauremys sinensis). Native to Taiwan, the Chinese stripe-necked turtle thrives in freshwater habitats, often seen basking on logs or rocks to soak up the sun.

The Red-eared Slider, while not native to Taiwan, has become a common sight in many of Taipei's waterways, parks, and ponds, including in Beutou. Originally introduced to Taiwan through the pet trade, these turtles now prompt discussions on biodiversity and the impacts of invasive species on local ecosystems. Environmentalists and biologists in Taipei study and manage their population to preserve the area's natural biodiversity and maintain balance with indigenous species.

After a challenging climb to 1500 meters, I was rewarded with this stunning White-eared Sibia (Heterophasia auricularis). Nestled in the dynamic backdrop of Tayoko Gorge national park. The White-eared Sibia is particularly adapted to the dense vegetation at high elevations, feeding on fruits, nectar, and insects

In Taiwanese culture, lanterns are much more than simple sources of light;
they are deeply ingrained in tradition and symbolism.
Here are a few ways in which lanterns hold
significance:
Image 2🏮 "美满" (Měimǎn) - A lantern’s wish from Jioufen for
your life to be filled with happiness and fulfillment.
Image 3🏮 "平安" (Píng'ān) - A glowing symbol for peace and
safety, as enduring as the storied paths of Jioufen.

Thanks to Catherine Radford for taking the photograph of the photograph ✌️

This is one of my favorite photographs from Jiufen. Whilst trying to be sneaky, capturing shots between the vibrant stalls within the market. I kept getting spotted! Eventually, I found the perfect strategy was to slowly walk taking cover behind another person with my camera down. I really love the reflection on the right-hand side of the image. It subtly adds depth to a scene that is bustling with atmosphere.

Jiufen is one of those magical places, wherever you point your camera; every moment is an opportunity. Famously known for aesthetically looking like Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away,
Jiufen enchants with its timeless charm and winding, lantern-lit alleys and winding staircases.
