Afternoon’s Summons

Streets of stone, witness to centuries,
History on the walls,
Shadow on the ground,
A cat,
Carrying an old story
in small steps.

The human, tired of noise,
The city, weary of crowds...
And this city, defying time, belongs only to moments.

Do you need to slow down?
In a city that never stops moving, you get one frame to tell the truth of that movement.
In Istanbul, time flows like the fountains—sometimes gentle, sometimes like a river carrying centuries on its back. I saw this young man rush past the fountain, robes chasing him like time itself, a fleeting line of black against the rhythm of water and stone.
To really see, you have to slow down. But the city never does.
That’s why street photography exists: to freeze a single gesture from the passing crowd, to reveal a hidden glance, the rhythm of a walk, or how light strikes a corner. In cities like Istanbul, street photography becomes a silent testimony on a stage where history and energy are in constant motion.
Sometimes everything flows too fast. But behind the viewfinder, you slow down, press the shutter, and in that single frame, you say:
“I saw it.”
Well, maybe more like :
“I am aware of this moment.”
Street photography is a way to breathe against the city’s relentless speed.
🖤 Do you need to slow down, too? Drop a 🖤 in the comments if you feel this.

This photo is from a series of photographic works called Behind the Scenes: Büyük Çamlıca Mosque.

The project is an on-going project but I decided to post one of the many images here with you and share my thoughts and feelings in this photograph from the point of emotional elements.

The philosophy of unfolding layers resonates deeply with my photography. By positioning the mosque behind the barriers and the trees, I am trying to invite viewers to think about the layers of existence—what is visible, what is hidden, what is created by us, and what exists beyond human influence.

I wanted to evoke a strong sense of contrast and tension. The barbed wire and fencing in the foreground, combined with the tall, dark trees, create a barrier between the viewer and the grand Çamlıca Mosque (Istanbul) in the background. The mosque’s minarets and dome are partially obscured, giving a sense of separation, as though the sacred or peaceful space is confined behind obstacles.

The image hints at how we, as humans, often feel separated from the divine or higher purpose by barriers, whether physical, societal, or internal. I believe that the emotional contrast mirrors the inner struggle many people feel between seeking spiritual or emotional peace and the societal or personal obstacles that keep them from fully accessing it.

Great Çamlıca Mosque, Istanbul.

Minarets vanish into mist, as if whispering to the sky.
The world feels smaller, quieter, yet the light holds steady. Perhaps faith is not in what we see, but in what remains when everything else fades.

How Conclave (2024) Can Teach Photographers Cinematic Storytelling

Edward Berger’s 2024 movie Conclave isn’t just a gripping papal thriller—it’s a masterclass in cinematography that offers endless inspiration for photographers.
I break downthe cinematography of Conclave (2024), exploring its visual storytelling techniques and creative use of light, framing, and composition from a photographer's perspective.
By analyzing key scenes, I’ll highlight practical takeaways that photographers can apply to their work, offering fresh insights into how movies can inspire compelling photographic narratives. Lighting, an essential aspect of photography, is equally vital in cinematography. Proper lighting sets the tone, defines characters, and shapes scenes by adding depth and texture.

Amidst the collision of tradition and modernity, the street breathes—a living tapestry of stories waiting to be told.

His mask, a subtle reminder of an ever-present undercurrent of change, contrasts with the enduring vibrancy of the scene.

Merhaba Simitçi

Meditation on the small rituals that bind a city’s inhabitants together. Every ‘simitçi’ (simit vendor) is quiet hero for the inhabitants of Istanbul, offering not just dough but a moment of connection in the midst of this bustling city. A fleeting moment where the mundane becomes meaningful.
