The Waterbuck is a large African antelope with a remarkable adaptation for life near water. Its shaggy, reddish-brown coat produces an oily foul smelling secretion that helps repel water, giving it a slightly greasy appearance. Waterbucks rarely stray far from rivers, lakes, and wetlands, where they can escape predators by retreating into the water. Only males grow the impressive, ridged horns, which can curve backward and then sweep forward at the tips. Despite their bulky build, waterbucks are strong swimmers and can use water as a refuge when threatened.
