What a difference a week made!

The winds howled, and the rain was relentless. Cyclone Alfie left a trail of destruction—flooding, power outages, and debris everywhere.

We felt incredibly lucky to have had time to prepare—trimming back the garden, setting up an emergency kit, and stocking up on tinned food and dried goods in case of power cuts.

I even turned our closet into a makeshift bunker since it was the only room without a window.

Thankfully, we were spared the worst where we are and kept power, which felt like such a luxury when so many were without.

Jaxson had a blast despite everything—we kept him busy with fun activities, and on Thursday, we managed to sneak in a few park visits between breaks in the weather. Our covered deck was also a lifesaver for messy play.

We were relieved when the rain finally stopped. Our house was okay, though we had a big cleanup ahead in the garden, and we are grateful it wasn’t worse.

One of the silver linings was having a little “charging party” yesterday! Since we still had power, friends and family came over to charge their devices, enjoy a cold drink, and take a moment to unwind. It was a reminder of how important community is in times like these.

Our final days in Bangkok were a mix of reflection and gratitude. Living in Hua Hin for nearly a year and a half gave me the precious chance to slow down and spend quality time with my son. Looking forward to what the next chapter has in store for us.

My New Year’s Resolution: Get in the Frame

This year, I’m making a promise to get in more photos with my son—not just the beautifully styled shoots in perfect locations, but the everyday moments. The laughter, the messy hair, the unposed, imperfect joy of just being together.

You might think, as a photographer, I’d have plenty of these moments captured. But the truth is, I don’t. Like so many mums (I see you!), I’m usually the one behind the camera or attempting a self-portrait. The result? It looks like my son is off having grand adventures solo or with my husband, while I’m invisible.

But I want to be part of the story. I want my son to look back and see me there—with him. Growing up, I’ve only ever seen one photo of myself at the age Jaxson is now, and it’s left me with endless questions. I don’t want that for him.

Here’s the thing: when our kids look back on these photos, they won’t see messy hair, bad outfits, or a few extra kilos. They’ll see us—how we played, laughed, and showed up for them. These are the memories that will matter.

So, here’s my challenge to all the mums: Get in the frame. Grab a tripod or prop up your phone. Capture the everyday magic. No one else needs to see these photos but you and your family.

And don’t forget to book those professional family portraits when you’re ready. These seasonal or annual photos are treasures that will only grow more valuable with time, especially when we look back on them after losing someone we love.

Let’s make 2025 the year we show up in the stories we’re writing with our families.
