It is so refreshing to see somebody clearly articulate why Susan Sontag's "On Photography" is absolute rubbish.

This is a great take on Sontag's misguided ideas that are still being pushed in photo programs across the country.

I'm done pretending her angry screed is anything other than a personal ax she needed to grind to express her disapproval of Diane Arbus and other photographers who dared to show a different perspective to the world.

It couldn't be farther from a "universal truth" if it had been written on Alpha Centauri. And photographers need to stop giving it any sort of reverence or respect. It deserves little.

Teachers need to stop holding this piece of judgemental crap up as some sort of legitimate criticism of the entire medium. It's one anxiety-filled person's rant about something she clearly doesn't understand at a personal level.

This post should be required reading for any students forced to swallow Sontag's garbage.

And why I never recommend "On Photography."
