A Little Different

Flying into Victoria Falls. I’d been there before — the Falls are spectacular.

But while still in Australia, I started researching Livingstone in Zambia. As usual, the excitement was running through my veins. The adventure had already started.

Crossing the border was a little easier than I thought. Another visa, another country… and another adventure.

The first thing I explored was the market. There are markets, and then there are markets. This one was different — a very poor market, with people doing the best they could to make a few dollars and make ends meet.

Then, luckily enough, I heard about the compound where people lived. Seeing people toughing it out and trying to make ends meet there was another massive eye-opener — and, for me, another highlight of the journey.

Photography wasn’t easy. It reminded me a lot of Papua New Guinea — people weren’t particularly comfortable having their photos taken. I had to ask politely and respect their wishes. But every now and again, I was lucky enough to get a shot off. And when I did, it meant that much more.

When I got back to Victoria Falls, the people I was staying with were telling me how beautiful the Falls were.

My story was just a little different.

But I suppose that’s a little bit of who I am — always looking for something different, camera in hand, enjoying the moment and capturing the stories that unfold along the way.

Bush Medicine

Back in my happy place — photographing people. I had the privilege of walking with the Bushmen, and I noticed what looked like a tattoo across one man’s back.

Turns out, I couldn’t have been more wrong. Those weren’t tattoos at all — they were scars from small cuts made in the back, where bush medicine is placed to help with different ailments and back problems.

And there I was thinking, “Gee, that’s an interesting tattoo!” 😂

Every day on the road, you learn something new.

From Darkness to Daylight

Out on a game drive in Kruger National Park, it was pitch dark, with nothing but a spotlight to work with. Trying to photograph a cheetah in those conditions was bloody difficult — getting the settings right and trying to capture anything worthwhile was a challenge. But I managed to get a glimpse.

Then, as the morning light started to break, things changed.

There, in the distance, was a leopard with an impala hauled high into the branches of a tree. The leopard was roaming around below, keeping a close eye on its hard-earned meal.

Thankfully, I had my zoom lens with me. From that distance, it was the only way I could bring this incredible scene into reach.

Sometimes you just have to be in the right place, at the right time… and have the right lens.

Kruger — Nature at Work

Swinging out of the back of the vehicle in Kruger National Park, I was lucky enough to witness something you don’t see every day — lions devouring their meal.

It wasn’t about the kill itself, but what came afterwards. Watching them feed, hearing the sounds, and seeing nature unfold right in front of my camera was an incredible experience.

They have to eat, just like everything else. That’s simply nature doing what nature does.

To be there, camera in hand, and witness this side of Africa was something I felt truly privileged to experience.

THE MOMENT BEFORE

Hanging out the back of a safari vehicle in Kruger National Park, watching a lion prepare to make its move.

That moment when everything goes quiet… the tension builds… and you know something is about to happen.

It was raw. It was intense. It was nature doing what nature does.

I’m bloody glad I had the camera in my hands.

Some moments you watch.
Some moments you photograph.
And some moments you never forget.

Beautiful Nuisance

Monkeys in the wild… beautiful from a distance, entertaining to watch, and bloody frustrating when they decide your food is theirs!

Doors locked, food protected, and forget about a peaceful picnic around a waterhole.

They can be a real nuisance — but when you’ve got a camera in your hand, they’re also bloody hard to resist. Beautiful creatures, and fantastic subjects to capture.

Sable Antelope . 🦌

The long, sweeping, heavily ringed horns and the dark-and-white facial markings are classic sable. This looks like a male, and they’re absolutely beautiful.

Looking at this crocodile, I can’t help but think about how powerful we humans believe we are.

Then you stand beside something like this and realise just how small and unpowerful we really are.

Out here in Africa, the animals remind you who’s truly powerful.

The hippo — one of Africa’s most dangerous animals, yet at first glance, they look almost peaceful.

But beneath that massive body is incredible power. Territorial, unpredictable and surprisingly fast, a hippo can turn from calm to frightening in an instant.

Out on a game drive in Africa,I found myself drawn right into the details — the mouth, the tongue, the eyes, every feature of this magnificent lioness.

And then, in the final few frames, she settled down and went to sleep.

The lion sleeps tonight.

What a beautiful creature.
