While on our honeymoon in Thailand, Caitlin and I went to the Samui Elephant Kingdom Sanctuary in Koh Samui. This ethical elephant sanctuary rescued all 16 of their elephants from the elephant entertainment tourism industry, which has become a growing problem in Thailand. This adorable little girl, Nong Fah, is the youngest elephant at the sanctuary at ten years old and she was rescued from an elephant trekking tour in Koh Samui. Since she is so young, the hope is that she will be reunited with her family once she is fully rehabilitated.

If you zoom in on the left base of the mountain (Kirkjufell), you will see two red buildings. Our Airbnb was the one on the left! We had an amazing time taking in all the scenery from our Airbnb’s hot tub.

PSA: If you are planning a trip to Iceland and are thinking about renting a 4WD vehicle, do so through a rental car company and not a third party site. Prior to our trip, we booked a truck with ample ground clearance through Expedia, which was necessary for our itinerary. When picking up our vehicle, the rental company said that they didn’t have the truck we booked and that third party sites often don’t know what vehicles rental companies have on their lots. Instead of the 4WD truck, we got an AWD mid-sized SUV with over an inch less ground clearance, which was potentially catastrophic for our itinerary. Thankfully, we were able to handle all of the F Roads and even a few river crossings on the way to Mælifell, the beautiful volcano pictured above, though not without a fair share of anxiety.

One of the deciding factors on why we went to Iceland when we did was for the possibility of seeing the Northern Lights. I’ll bet many of you have this experience on your bucket list and I am no different. During our trip, I woke up night after night around midnight to check the skies to only be filled with disappointment. My naivety got the better of me as I was expecting the lights to put on a show every night that the skies were clear. Boy was I wrong! We had to wait until the second to last night of our trip to FINALLY see the Northern Lights in all their glory. They danced all over the night sky for well over an hour before fading into the darkness. Although, I initially had to shoot through some trial and error, I had a blast capturing this amazing experience.

I GOT A DRONE!

I have wanted to buy a drone for a while now, but between the cost and the anxiety of crashing said costly drone, I shelved the idea. Nothing quite like the influences of an upcoming trip to the vast, picturesque landscape of Iceland to make that decision for me, am I right?
