Somalis: Origin and Culture

Somalis are an African ethnic group originally from the Horn of Africa, mainly Somalia, Ethiopia, Djibouti, and northern Kenya. They have a long history of pastoralism, trade, and strong social connections within families and clans.

Who Somalis Are

Somalis speak the Somali language.

They follow Islam, which plays a central role in their daily life, culture, and social rules.

Family and clan structures are the foundation of Somali society, with great respect given to elders and traditional customs.

Ethnic Origins

Somalis originate from the Horn of Africa, where they have lived for thousands of years.

Historically, they have traded with Arabs, Indians, and other East African communities.

Ethnically, Somalis belong to the Cush*tic group, one of the major branches of African languages and peoples.

What Makes Somalis Different from Other Societies

1. Pastoral Lifestyle – Somalis are known for raising camels, cattle, and goats, with much of their life centered around livestock.

2. Clan-Based Society – Somali social life is built around family and clan ties, unlike many other societies that rely more on urban or state structures.

3. Language and Oral Tradition – Somali is rich in poetry, stories, and oral history, making their culture unique compared to neighboring languages.

4. Islamic Influence – Religion deeply shapes Somali laws, customs, and daily life, distinguishing them from non-Muslim societies.

5. Hospitality and Social Ethics – Somalis are famous for hospitality, mutual support, and protecting the honor of individuals and families.

The known history — both the ancient and modern era — shows that the Somali people are naturally strong fighters. A Somali person, even if defeated, will still attempt to take revenge, even if it costs him his life.
When the European colonizers witnessed the bravery and resistance of the Somalis, they decided to divide Somali territories into five regions. These were:

1. Southern Somalia – colonized by Italy

2. Northern Somalia – colonized by Britain

3. Western Somalia (Ogaden) – handed over to Ethiopia by the British

4. North Eastern Somalia (NFD) – also handed over to Kenya by the British

5. Djibouti – colonized by France

This division was done to weaken Somali unity because of the fierce resistance against colonial powers.

I used to argue and fight a lot with my husband. Even though I never asked for a divorce, he divorced me. When I asked him why, he said: ‘I cannot fight with you or argue with you. Just go back to your family.’
I didn’t want a divorce — I wanted him to fight for me or stand up to me. Even if he had slapped me once, it would have been normal to me. But divorcing me was not what I wanted
