Since 1894, the area of Jharia, Dhanbad, has been well known for its large coal fields. According to official sources, this part of India has the largest coal reserves in the country. Despite all the international agreements, mining activity is not ceasing here. The landscape has been radically changed , and local communities have found their ways of living in close symbiosis with coal. Despite the official prohibition, men, women, young and old alike have learned how to make their living through the manual extraction of coal, later sold on the black markets. This long-term project of mine offers a glimpse into the daily life of locals living in unimaginable conditions.

The Czech Republic, The Vysocina Region, 30.12.2022, Tomas Predajna

The experienced forester, Mr Frantisek, cuts down attacked trees. In order to reduce the danger of further spread of bark beetle, it is necessary to cut out at least 15 metres of healthy forest from the infested spot. This process must be done as quickly as possible, preferably before the begin of the next hatch cycle.

The exhibition is currently on view in Prague, Czech Republic at Slunečni námestí 13.

In 'The Nightfall Of Czech Forests', Tomas Predajna investigates how the ongoing battle between the beetle and spruce trees has led to extensive forest extraction, with scientists researching the beetle genome for a potential antidote. The project emphasizes the need for resilient, diverse forests that can adapt to local climates and provide long-term benefits, urging foresters to make crucial decisions for the future.

Explore this story and many others at The Visualising Climate Crisis Exhibition by the NOOR Foundation and SLOVAKPRESSPHOTO. The travelling exhibition is opening today in Prague, Czech Republic at Sluneční Náměsti 13 and will be on view from 24 November 2023 to 31 January 2024.

The climate crisis is the greatest challenge humanity has ever faced. A delicate balance has been tipped over, unleashing a series of chain consequences the scale of which we are yet to grasp.

Visual storytellers hold the potential to make a critical difference in our understanding of the climate crisis, functioning as a bridge between complex science, political strategies, economic interests and citizens.

Guided by award-winning visual storytellers Kadir van Lohuizen and Esther Horvath, eleven authors from Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia worked on stories close to home.

The authors take us on a journey of discovery: from the restoration of the wetlands of the Danube, we examine the consequences of the most intense drought in more than a hundred years in Hungary, while learning the stories of the scientists whose experiments help us understand how climate change affects our lives, amongst many other stories.

The wide-ranging narrative threads of this exhibition are woven together into a tapestry of human experiences curated for us to see, to learn from and to act on.
