Seeing the light at the end of the tunnel

“Did you bring your camera with you?“ “Are you gonna start creating content again?”

These are some of the questions people asked me when they saw that I was travelling again.

It has been exactly a year since I posted anything photography related on Instagram. And the reason why I stopped is simply because I ran out of inspiration and motivation that had kept me going for those 4 years of active posting. I struggled with putting photography aside and taking a hiatus because letting go of something that has been a huge part of your life for 4 years is unthinkable at that point of time. I was afraid that letting go would result in losing everything I’ve worked so hard for and it’ll all be for nothing. But there’s something even worse that I didn’t want and that’s losing the real reason why I love photography. Storytelling and inspiring others through my photos. If keeping my page active and staying relevant on social media meant that I had to upload backlogs and mediocre photos that I’m not proud of, then what’s the point?

It’s weird because with travel restrictions being lifted and we can all travel again, I still feel uninspired to pick up my camera because I was so sure that not being able to travel was the cause of it all. But I’m at ease that my interest in getting to know people through travelling and learning about their lives is still as strong as before. It’s just that I don’t feel the need to document and capture everything with my lens. Who knows when I’ll pick up my camera again and share beautiful photos with everyone but I know I’m perfectly at peace with myself for taking a break (while torturing myself with bouldering)

My apologies to everyone who followed me for photography but instead had to endure ridiculous memes I post or random stories about my life.

Dedication for the craft. Hard work and discipline for longevity of the business. Sadly passion isn’t always in the picture for these traditional craftsman. But the fact most of them are in their respective businesses for more than 30 years or more says a lot about their character and commitment towards what they do. @ Singapore

This is as raw as it can get. If you’ve ever been to a wet market in Asia, these are some of the scenes you’ll come across. Most of the modern markets we see now are taking a more sanitary approach by displaying the meats behind a counter. @ Hong Kong

[JENGIVEAWAY] WIN 2-Night Stay at any JEN in Asia + F&B Credit!

People often think of progress as modernisation and disrupting industries to change the way we live, leaving traditions and cultures behind as they become less relevant. But I believe those are actually the core of what makes New Asia what it is, and we have the influence to help the rest of the world see that.

Through my lens, I want people to see the New Asia I know. One that flourishes in an ever-evolving world through innovation and creativity that builds on the history, beliefs and practices of our ancestors. It’s important that we stay rooted in our cultural identities in shaping its future.

In my photos, I seek to capture the harmonious balance of old and new, like the traditional Tai-Chi embedded within the metropolitan city of Shanghai, Ang Chai craft making, Thaipusam festival and modern architecture like Singapore’s Jewel Changi Airport alongside time-classic historical buildings in Hong Kong. These different elements coming together, is what New Asia is.

With , I’d like to give you a chance to experience this New Asia for yourself. Follow the steps below to win a 2-night stay at hoteljen + F&B credit.

Happy Earth Day!

There’s a serious problem the world is facing at the moment that is often ignored. And that’s clearing of forests and land for more structural buildings as modern civilisation progresses. Although this isn’t a definite solution, I think the way forward is to incorporate more greenery and nature into architecture and I’m glad to see more these combination here in Singapore.

Morning groceries run scenes at Tanglin halt wet market.

Always love the chaotic scenes and energy that goes on at the wet market ever since I was a kid tagging along with my mum in the morning. Everyone seem to know each other and I really think the stall holders have better memory than medical students because they always seem to remember everyone’s orders and preferences. @ Singapore

Keeping traditions alive.

One of the things that Jeffrey does in his chinese cultural shop is to Ang Chai or Chai Kee. A traditional red curtain hung over door post of houses or temples during auspicious periods. He explains that this craft of his gives him immense pride because he’s known for it not only in Singapore but overseas as well. Seeing him at work and folding the red cloth effortlessly showed how dedicated he is and you can really tell through the end product the amount of years spent perfecting his craft.

Each Ang Chai takes around 3-4 hours to complete and he tells me that these hours doesn’t seem long to him at all because he always feel like time flies the fastest when he engrossed in perfecting each one. And the smiles on his clients faces give him the greatest satisfaction. @ Singapore
