Got to know Julia Winter – The Bubbly Artist recently, and she’s exactly that, bubbly, expressive, and full of life, just like her art.

Her works are vibrant with colours and creativity, often blending different materials in unexpected ways. One of her unique touches is painting on old book covers, transforming them into beautiful, layered pieces that play wonderfully with colour and texture.

Another fascinating aspect of her art is how she weaves calligraphy forms into her paintings — expressing emotion and flow through the movement of ink.
Julia has exhibited her works not only here in Singapore, but also across the world, with her latest show in Amsterdam. Check out her incredible creations at

I was fascinated by the low clouds, so I took out my camera to capture the scene. What made the shot even better was a lady with a yellow umbrella who happened to walk by, she added such a beautiful touch to the photo.

I went up to chat with her. Helen, who told me she’s visiting Singapore for a few days. She’s originally from Scotland and now lives in Australia. I showed her the photo and mentioned how she was at the right place at the right time for my shot. We both laughed, and she completely agreed.

Helen, I wish you a pleasant stay here in Singapore and a safe trip home!

Kedai Makan Muhajirin – Toa Payoh’s $1 Nasi Lemak
I went for lunch with a friend, and he brought me to this coffeeshop. When I saw the sign, I thought it was a typo error, $1 Nasi Lemak? To my pleasant surprise, it was real. Naturally, I ordered one. After snapping a quick shot of the dish, my curiosity got the better of me, and I just had to speak with the owners.

Inside, I met Miss Nana, who was busy doing some accounting. She told me her husband, Mr. Jirin, is the cook and the one running the business. I felt a little guilty disturbing them, he was washing up when his wife called him over, telling him I wanted to interview him.

Mr. Jirin, a bubbly and friendly man, shared that this is a second-generation business, passed down from his 78 year old father, Mr. Tahir, who started it with his wife back in 1987. When I asked why he still sells nasi lemak at just $1, Mr. Jirin explained that it has been priced at $1 since 1987, and they want to keep it that way. They chose to make it affordable, especially for the many elderly residents in the area. Even their other dishes remain very reasonably priced.

For a moment, I assumed his father had already retired and was resting at home. To my amazement, he returned to the shop later — energetic, lively, and still moving around helping out. His upbeat spirit was undeniable, and as Jirin said, his father’s mindset remains young and vibrant. After chatting with him, I could clearly see that.
Of course, after all this, it was time to taste the nasi lemak. The rice was fragrant, the sambal was delicious, and the crispy ikan bilis with peanuts tied it all together. For $1, with such flavour, you really can’t ask for more.

Most of all, I have deep respect for this family, not only for their dedication to good food but also for their commitment to keeping it affordable for the elderly and those who may be financially tight.

Natalie Dau – Guinness World Record Holder
One day, I had a thought: we often celebrate victories, success, and trophies. And while there’s nothing wrong with that, learning to embrace the journey is just as important, if not more. The struggles, the tough days, the moments of doubt, those are what shape character, values, and empathy.

Just like in sports, we see athletes crossing the finish line, lifting trophies, and smiling in glory. But what we rarely see are the countless hours of training, the early mornings, the pain, and the moments they almost gave up.

That’s why I decided to start a series on sportspeople. They train so hard, yet many photographs I come across don’t fully capture their essence.

So I reached out to Natalie Dau, a remarkable sportswoman I had photographed before for Run Singapore . Rain or shine, we agreed to go ahead with the shoot, embracing the moment, because every moment has its own beauty. It turned out to be a gloomy day, but not Natalie’s spirit. Humble, kind, and full of energy, she radiated positivity.

Natalie isn’t just any athlete. Among her many wins and titles, one stands out, she is an Australian ultramarathoner and Guinness World Record holder, recognised for the Fastest Crossing of Peninsular Malaysia on foot, a solo run that took 8 days and 46 minutes in 2024. Despite all her accomplishments, she carries herself with a gentle, gracious spirit.

During our shoot, I asked her: “People often see your success, but can you share some of your struggles? Were there moments you felt like giving up? And how did you pick yourself up to keep going?” Her reply was simple yet powerful:
“Everyday is a struggle, it doesn’t get easier. But I try to remember my why (which can change), and know that I have to show up for myself to be my best version, that’s on me, no one else can do it.”

I’ll be sharing a book series I’ve done for her soon. Thank you, Natalie, you’re not just an athlete, you’re an inspiration.
