Natalie Dau – Guinness World Record Holder
One day, I had a thought: we often celebrate victories, success, and trophies. And while there’s nothing wrong with that, learning to embrace the journey is just as important, if not more. The struggles, the tough days, the moments of doubt, those are what shape character, values, and empathy.
Just like in sports, we see athletes crossing the finish line, lifting trophies, and smiling in glory. But what we rarely see are the countless hours of training, the early mornings, the pain, and the moments they almost gave up.
That’s why I decided to start a series on sportspeople. They train so hard, yet many photographs I come across don’t fully capture their essence.
So I reached out to Natalie Dau, a remarkable sportswoman I had photographed before for Run Singapore . Rain or shine, we agreed to go ahead with the shoot, embracing the moment, because every moment has its own beauty. It turned out to be a gloomy day, but not Natalie’s spirit. Humble, kind, and full of energy, she radiated positivity.
Natalie isn’t just any athlete. Among her many wins and titles, one stands out, she is an Australian ultramarathoner and Guinness World Record holder, recognised for the Fastest Crossing of Peninsular Malaysia on foot, a solo run that took 8 days and 46 minutes in 2024. Despite all her accomplishments, she carries herself with a gentle, gracious spirit.
During our shoot, I asked her: “People often see your success, but can you share some of your struggles? Were there moments you felt like giving up? And how did you pick yourself up to keep going?” Her reply was simple yet powerful:
“Everyday is a struggle, it doesn’t get easier. But I try to remember my why (which can change), and know that I have to show up for myself to be my best version, that’s on me, no one else can do it.”
I’ll be sharing a book series I’ve done for her soon. Thank you, Natalie, you’re not just an athlete, you’re an inspiration.
