Summer fireworks across Lake Toya

First trip to Hokkaido, and also the first time I shot fireworks in Japan too! Fireworks at Lake Toya was more tricky than I would have thought, because each burst is fired from a moving boat.

I did a very long exposure at first (around 4 minutes) and my highlights were clipping so I switched to the usual blending method for each burst. It's also why the fireworks are more intense on the left side of this photo. Probably would have gotten better results with double the exposure and stopping down another 1 or 2 stops to get everything in one shot.

Fireworks in Japan are also practically smokeless (or at least way less smoky compared to ours), which really helps with the processing and lets you do niche things like making very long exposures of fireworks fired from a moving platform.

Thunderbolts by the Bay

Unexpected lightning bolts after the heavy showers yesterday right before sunset. Wished that the electrical storm would cover the entire sky instead of only on the left, but it's worth the wait in the rain!

Toh Guan Thunderbolts 2025

There was an electrical storm over my area yesterday and I had to try my luck again at this angle. It wasn't as intense as the one that I shot in 2018 (7 years back 🌚) but I'm happy with this result too!
