Dressed Up Dreams Photo Studio

Dressed Up Dreams Photo Studio Hanfu Portrait Photography inspired by the beauty of ancient Chinese dynasties. Based in Singapore

We specialise in the ancient Chinese portrait photography style (中国古风唯美人像), a genre of photography which has become increasingly popular in China in recent years. Some view this genre as a resistance against the nation's rapid globalisation and modernisation; by seeking to capture and and re-present the aesthetics of a bygone era in their images, the style offer viewers a romanticised glimpse into

the world of the ancients, creating a deeper sense of cultural rootedness through renewed appreciation for traditional Chinese arts and history. Some classic elements in ancient style portrait photography include: a mood of tranquil grandeur and refined elegance; the inclusion of traditional arts like calligraphy, tea brewing, and zither-playing; using beautiful open landscapes or traditional architecture for the setting; as well as a clean and light colour palette which showcases the elegant beauty of the subject. While the composition is often influenced by other traditional arts like Chinese landscape and portrait painting, themes may take inspiration from mythology, literature and music, with many photographers referencing more modern works like sword-fighting novels, pop songs, or manhwa comics in their images. Today, there are many photo studios and independent photographers in China who specialise in this style - for example, 不可说 (杜小聪), 知竹zz, 当小时, and 疯子Charles, amongst many others. Dressed up Dreams hopes to introduce the style to Singapore, and to also create more interest in ancient Chinese culture and historical dress. While we are limited by the lack of suitable natural landscapes for such shoots locally, we hope to create a unique experience for each of our clients by transporting them to a different time and place within the imaginative space of our images. We are also interested in fusing Chinese traditional style with modern or western aesthetics in experimental concept photography.

This client from Hong Kong was game to go bold ✨

We loved how this set turned out - a nice blend of opulence and gentle elegance, reminding us of spring with a touch of glamour.

Some clients prefer to select from ready-made themes, and we get asked about this a lot. While you can reference past shoots, we prefer customising each session instead—because some lighting styles suit specific facial features. It’s more thoughtful, more flattering, and far more personal.

Our process takes a little more time, but that’s where the magic happens. If you enjoy creative collaboration as much as the final photos, we’d love to work with you 🤍

Moonlight reverie for a client, manhwa fantasy style.

She looks great in blue!

Fantasy styling doesn’t follow strict rules. As long as everything feels cohesive and suits the person, it works. But if your wearing traditional Tang hanfu, having long, flowing hair won’t look right. With cultural garments, beauty isn’t just about how it looks - understanding what you’re wearing, and why, is part of the story too.

Inspired by the drama 国色芳华, this client envisioned herself as a Tang dynasty noblewoman, and came very prepared! She brought her own accessories, chessboard, and Weiqi set to complete the transformation.

It’s nice to see Chinese dramas leaning closer to historical accuracy in costume design, even though makeup styles cater to modern tastes. To see styling based on actual museum artefacts, you should take a trip to .zi.lou!

A simple airy set with !

This has got to be our most popular hanfu so far and for good reason, but we almost didn’t get it in!

For those who don’t already know, hanfu isn’t fast fashion. Many stores only do custom production. That means they’ll produce a sample, take orders, and you’ll need to wait weeks or even months for your dress to be made and shipped out.

We almost cancelled our order because delivery kept being delayed due to production issues. But it finally shipped out after three months and thankfully, the wait was worth it! Workmanship was good and it has been a very popular choice for our clients!

The best thing about it? It looks flattering on a wide range of body types (fits S to XL), with a soft waistline that gives shape without clinging too tightly.

Of course, this is a modernised pattern so it looks quite different from what people would have worn back then in the Tang times (the era from which this hanfu is loosely based on.)

The funny thing is, the store has since stopped releasing new designs, so this hanfu has become a bit of a one-hit wonder. If it has caught your eye, come book your photo session before we retire it from the collection some day! 📸

If you love a flowy, feminine look but don’t want it to feel overly sweet and girly, a minimalist set and cooler lighting can completely shift the mood.

For this shoot with , we explored a 清冷aesthetic with a warm-toned modernised hanfu. There’s no exact English translation for the term, but imagine the feeling of moonlight, or a quiet snowy morning—cool, serene, and a little distant.

We love to experiment with new moods and styles, so just DM us if you want to create something together!

Time moved slower in the past, and so did people.

In some studios, photoshoots happen quickly—clients are cycled through a set of fixed poses just to “get the shot.” But hanfu calls for a different pace.

We like to approach each session as a collaboration. That means we don’t work from a checklist of poses, but take the time to understand what suits you best. Your comfort level (some are more flexible than others!), your best angles, and the mood you want to convey are all important elements that are considered in the posing process. It’s a process of discovery for both of us, not rote replication. And that takes more time.

For this particular set, the client shared some photo references she particularly loved during the consultation process, and we were happy to incorporate elements from her inspiration. The final images were uniquely hers - a little dreamlike, somewhat surreal, and full of soft strength.

Want something traditional but not too traditional for your portraits or couple photoshoot?

Say hello to 新中式 — the New Chinese Style.

It’s like the perfect blend of heritage and modern flair.

You’ll still see those beautiful details from traditional dress—elegant cuts, embroidery, flowy fabrics—but everything’s updated with a cleaner, softer, more modern twist. Easy to wear, super photogenic, and full of personality!

It can even be a dress option for ROMs or morning tea ceremonies - giving you a touch of tradition (hello, proud parents!), without feeling too formal or old-fashioned.

Perfect if you're looking for something meaningful and stylish!
