In 2014, I captured this moment at Balingup Heights at a life milestone. After a full Chinese zodiac cycle of 12 years in the cloistered corners of my website, it feels pre-ordained to bring this image into the light today as we welcome the Chinese Year of the Fire Horse (丙午).

Traditional wisdom associates the Fire Horse with "wild energy" and heat.

But I offer this image as a balance to the force:
• Fire refined into Light: Not a blaze that consumes, but a dawn that illuminates.
• Chaos met with Groundedness: Not a gallop, but the steady, humble peace of the morning graze.
• The Gift of Refuge: A reminder to stay connected to the "Steady Warmth" when the world feels too loud.

This is my benediction for the year: May you find the "sentinel" strength to remain at peace, the discernment to find meaning and arrive at deep wellness.

A mirror of calm, the rush of the tide.
Hush and swell, a bridge abide.
A path in the midst, chasing first light.
Framing an image, the soul's delight.

There is a time-honored wisdom in the phrase "be still." In photography—and in life—there is often pressure to move faster, but clarity rarely comes from the rush. It comes from the stillness required to find the right path.

There is a unique power in a still image to capture what the noise of the world often misses. For me it is exactly the timelessness of a still image that makes it lasting and satisfying.

Although this photo of the Marina Barrage was in taken in 2010, I only gave pause to discover its message fifteen years later.

How are you finding your stillness as we head into 2026? 🙂

Each year, I reflect to make meaningful e-cards for special occasions. This year has been particularly challenging, both on the family and work fronts. Recently, as I ran out of ideas, I wondered if I should bother. After all, these efforts often get lost in the overwhelming festivity of the season.

That was, until I saw what my young daughter had crafted all on her own quietly one day. Epiphany + eureka! A star of an idea. 🌠

For many, Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year, a celebration to deck the halls. For others, it may feel more like a silent night of endurance and longing for better days.

Here’s to the origin of Christmas—the First Noel: a ray of hope that guides us through life’s trials. May it foster resilience and a nimble spirit that transforms adversity into opportunity, refreshing us with enduring love and joy in the little drummer boy moments of life.

Just like this nativity crib, created by a child from simple, recycled materials—sometimes, the most beautiful things are discovered in the humblest of ideas.

Singapore is not known for typhoons, hurricanes or tornadoes. But there is the Sumatra Squall... still a force to be reckoned with, looking at the number of large fallen trees at East Coast Park in the wake of the last one on 17 September 2024 night. Could be a record. Climate change is real.

and things that have fascinated me since young. When I was a boy in the 80's, during a school excursion to Jurong Bird Park, the (then) bird show was especially captivating and I most of the precious film in my compact camera on it. After the roll of film was developed, I discovered a shot of a hawk in , panned just nicely with the background trees in motion blur and the hawk in sharp focus (taken with only a simple autofocus compact camera). It was the best shot of anything I have ever photographed then and my favorite.

One day my school teacher asked the class for photo submissions for an exhibition. This me to submit that photo along with the negative for possible enlargement. That was the last I ever saw of the photo and the negative. I can't quite remember there being any exhibition or what happened after that, until months later, at the year end housekeeping of the classroom, when my teacher could not find my photo nor the negative. It more than a few . With the loss of that photo, out of the window. Jurong was way across the island from where I lived too.

Decades later, I was brought back to Jurong Bird Park by my outings. Although the fateful photo was still in my memory, being there was refreshing and . It an opportunity for redemption. Now, following Jurong Bird Park's recent closure (on 3 Jan), we have photos as memories. These are what I have managed to reclaim...
